Hi, I'm having random Windows 7 complete system hangs.

They produce no errors or warnings in the log other than a notice of an incomplete shutdown. I'm using the intel chipset driver for Vista with the system, and the Realtek HD audio driver for vista with it (this was happening before that driver being installed) and everything else is the default windows 7 driver, it's guaranteed to happen on Skype starting up with a lot of unread events, and copying a file to the desktop with Filezilla, but sometimes it's just random. Complete freeze, no mouse, no keyboard, no ctrl+alt+del

Here's my computer specs:

Windows 7 RC (7100) x64

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16 GHz (was overclocked to 3.51 during install, is now reduced to stock, problem remains)

ATI Radeon 4650 HD 1 GB version

Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L motherboard (Intel ICH10 chipset)

6 GB of DDR2 800 PC6400 RAM

a 640 GB WD Caviar Green HDD (SATA slave, not boot drive)

a 500 GB Seagate Barracuda GT 7200.11 (SATA master boot drive)

Sony DVD-RAM drive

Linksys PCI 802.11G wireless adapter (using 64 bit ralink drivers since the chipset matches, no prior issues when used on Win7 7000)

Being through, I ran stress testers on maximum load on each hardware component, no crash on full CPU load, no crash on HDD load test, both drives and no crash on high RAM usage.

I also remember similair symptoms on Vista, but this also did not happen iirc on Windows 7 7000.

The system was overclocked during install, I reset the BIOS to "optimised defaults" after a few crashes, no difference.

Anyone have any ideas?

Having the same problem with Win 7, 7100, X64 ver in that it seriously hangs on the Starting Windows message. classpnp.sys appears to be the culprit. It started a little over a week ago with daily boot-up. Happened one time, rebooted, went right through to login without issue. Next day, same scenario. Following day, had to reboot twice.

Given that my machine takes forever to boot when I have my iPod connected I opted to disconnect. Following day, 1 reboot required. The rest was 1,2,2. Today - I had to reboot 9 times. Progressively worse? Then, for no apparent reason, it gave a login - logged in and when I arrived at my desktop all icons were gone and black background. Killed and restarted explorer. Took about 3 minutes but it finally rebuilt the desktop and populated the screens.

Here is a primer on what most posts have talked about and what I've tried:

  • Did not have any issues installling, this is a single os-boot, on a fresh drive
  • Did set the BIOS: USB mode - legacy to disabled.
  • Did disable AHCI
  • Unplugged all USB devices minus the external 'hub' in my monitors.
  • Tried Safe-mode
  • Tried 'last known good hardware config'
  • Tried 'disable unsigned driver requirement'
One last element here that I'll throw into the mix: Over the last few days, for no reason other than doing HD video or some other intense visual (not application specific) the Nvidia drivers crash. This is the only peculiar behavior that coincides with this 'Starting Windows' hang. It didn't happen before and neither did the hang.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as this is wicked-frustrating.

I use a Magnum.
Try it without the wireless card or update drivers and change power plan for wireless connection. I had random freezes in the past with 7000,7057,7068,7100. I used Ralink card and drivers.
Without the wireless card I did not have one freeze. I believe the Ralink driver is the culprit. I tried changing the driver manually to ralink adapter v2, that somehow lessened the freezes but it does not solve the problem.

I just ran the scan, however, I wasn't able to see the ending - but when I tried to run it again I was prompted that a 'repair' needed to be completed via reboot.

I was very hesitant  to reboot to test, but, did so, and it SEEMS TO HAVE WORKED! Thank you for the fix. If it continues or if I see it pop up again I will come back to this thread. Thanks again.

Update #1: Ok, I spoke too soon above. The same problem hit this morning. However, this time it was after a reboot. I was able to boot up fine early - then about an hour later on reboot I was unable to get to the login screen. Again, same scenario. Ran the sfc cmd and as well as created a system repair disc. I will run that outright tomorrow if this problem persists.

Update #2: I'm probably writing this WAY TOO EARLY but I wanted to put this up in case others are having similar issues. I believe I have a possible, albeit ugly, fix for the problems I'm seeing. I have created the Emergency System Disk on a successful boot some time ago and am keeping that in the drive.

So, I power up in the morning - hit 'space' to boot the optical disc and then choose the first option 'fix startup problems'. This, I can only assume GUI's the SFC /SCANNOW above graciously listed by jfar. It reports that it couldn't find a problem. When I use the command prompt option from the previous screen and try to manually run the SFC/SCANNOW - it tells me that a pending operation is ahead in the queue. So, I reboot - and without going to optical disc, all boots normally. Occasionally I'll get masssive lag when it displays the desktop but if I wait a bit it resolves itself and all is back to semi-normal.

If anyone comes across the hotfix for this specific problem would you please post? It's apparently not being released with the automatic updates.

Same problem for me. None of the above solved it.

AMD QUad Core 6G RAM, ASUS M3A motherboard.

The 7000 beta install works fine, this freeze bug showed up in 7100 only.

I had a problem with Build 7100 hanging.
I ran sfc /scannow and had no integrity violations.

It would hang with the screen OK and the mouse moved OK but clicking on anything or pushing any key would not pull it out of the hang mode. Leaving it for several minutes it would sometime come out. Usually had to use the power button.

Will the win7 final release correct for this to pull it out of the hang, sleep or maybe comatose mode?

Do you have info or a link on how to install the latest build, maybe 7232.
I did an update this morning but it is still 7100.
I have data and Ubuntu 9.10a so I would like the latest build of win7 without losing this.

Or 7260 maybe?
I am running 32bit.

You can do a clean install on the currently Win7 partition and you don't loose anything else.

Thanks again masterB!
I used the upgrade option rather than clean install with the 7260 .iso.

No data was lost and I have not had it hang since then.

Problem Solved

Hi Guys,

After my last post, I decided that instead of replacing my 7100 build witha 7000 I would install 7000 on a second hard drive. Well that paid off, cos within hours of building 7000 and getting it looking as I wanted it, I got the first timeout warning, telling me that 7000 would expire in 11 days.

I took this as an omen and looked deeper into my hanging/freeze/lockup problem.

I removed my Belkin Wireless adapter from the computer, and the problem has resolved completely. No hangs at all. In fact 7100 is starting to look like it was worth the upgrade finally.

My only issue is that I now have no backup internet connection, my primary being a wired adapter onboard, and this belkin being my secondary.

Reinstalling the card and refreshing the drivers resulted in lockups again. So it is repeatable and thus confirmed as the root cause.

So the ralink driver definately seems to be the culprit.

Still did it on 7100, but after a while, I found a solution

My machine, as a lot of other intel based machines has HPET on board, on my motherboard it has a switch for 32bit or 64bit mode, but my BIOS had the option in a weird place, so try to look for that in your BIOS if you have issues, happily using it right now ^^

CLASSPNP.sys is a plug and play file for things like USB drives, eternal HD, external devices using usb. Could you try booting in safemode (hit F8 repeatedly when booting) Let us know if you can safe boot. do you have a backup that yu can resore from? if you can boot in safe mode you can check your system files by runnning sfc /scannow.

I'll made the scf thing before making anything on the machine.
