Windows 7 randomly hangs

Yes, I'm able to run win in safe mode, but it also take long to boot, and when It finally load, and I get into the system, I made something and it inmediatelly hangs.
I'll made the scf thing before making anything on the machine.

does it take a long time to safe boot? when did it hang? did you get to your desktop or did you hang on classpnp again?

OK if you can boot into BIOS. Look for acpi and change it. If its checked unckeck, and if unchecked check it

Its in the power section of your BIOS. On reboot hit whatever key you hit (maybe F-2) to get into bios and look around for the power section

Ok I have just realize that problems come when trying to access hard drive D (Second HD)
It just hangs when trying to access it

Ok just to update the treath ^.^
I found the source of the problem, my second H.D has his first sectors damaged, and thats why the O.S takes that long to start, trying to read the damaged sectors.
I run a program that repaired the bad sectors, and now it is running nice ^.^

Now the question is, how the sectors got that bad? Like I said It was working nice and suddenly start to fail.

when a sector goes bad it could be from vibration, heat, QC, and many other variables. Its just before they go bad that they make the most trouble for us

tried sfc /scannow command etc all looks good but still hangs
BTW this is RC7100 64bit i'm currently trying to ungrade to RTM but can't even launch the (custom as RTM can't natively upgrade)DVD arrgh

where does it hang? in the install, when expanding, when rebooting, etc?

second question. where didi you get the dvd, MS? how did you burn it (nero, imgburn,etc)? does the dvd boot on another computer.

I was having similar problems, but with build 7600 (64 bit), the system was fine for weeks, I went on vacation and came back and it suddenly started hanging for no apparent reason.

I went through my services, and set all non-essential ones to manual where they were automatic, removed all entries from my startup and it still hung. No reasons were given in system log so I had no idea where to go, then after some googling, I tried all the previously mentioned fixes:

disabling legacy USB
disabling AHCI
disabled all fancy motherboard settings, eg AM2 boost/auto overclocking etc
disabled ACPI
configured my setup to run in test mode to disable driver signing

of course, it still hung! Although I noticed that if it hung when I had music playing, the sound would become terribly distorted, as if the sample rate set in my sound options didn't match the sample rate my media player was outputting to.

Sure enough, after I updated my sound drivers (realtek high definition audio) which reset my sample rate to 24bit, 48000Hz, I haven't had a system hang once. (it's only been a day, but it usually hangs about every 2 or so hours, I'll let you know if I was wrong)

So, I know everyone says update your drivers, but are you remembering to update your audio drivers from the microsoft ones to your card's manufacturers'?

Still crashes!

Although windows is definitely more stable after updating my audio drivers, it crashed again today. Just before grinding to a halt this time though, I received a balloon message from my audio driver telling me that I'd unplugged my speakers (I hadn't) which leads me to confirm my suspicions that this was a problem with my soundcard/audio drivers. I'm experimenting now with legacy audio support (I didn't realise how much of a pain it would be to access my BIOS after disabling legacy USB support lol! I need a PS/2 keyboard now!) and the "exclusive access mode" present in the ausio options. Ultimately I'll have to disable my sound entirely to be sure this is the source of my problem.

I do of course realise that audio this isn't the cause of everyone's problems, I just think it's important that it's known that it can be, and a record of my steps to try and fix this is kept.

Sorry for bumping an old thread back up but I figured since thr's already a thread discussing about my current problem, I might as well post in this thread itself.

I came back after about close to a week out of town and when I got back and turned my pc back on, it hang after about 15mins. Had to manually reboot and it was fine but later on unable to detect my internet connection. Had to reboot after about 30mins. It went fine after that for about 45mins and then hang when I was gaming. Again, manually rebooted more than 15 times iirc and same issues everytime, tested w movies running, msn/itune exited, only firefox up, unplugged my LAN, almost everything that I could recall of. Tested sfc /scannow and it stated that everything is a-ok.

Btw, Im running on Win 7 RTM 7600 and only had this issue starting around 6 hours ago.

Any help please?

In the end, I reinstalled all my motherboard drivers and my hangs seem to have stopped now. Don't use the disk you got with the motherboard though, as this probably won't have win7 drivers unless you bought it recently, instead go to your motherboard manufacturer's site and see if they have updated drivers for win7.

Also, try the other suggestions here, I think this thread has compiled just about all the popular fixes on the internet for windows 7 hangs. It wouldn't hurt to run disk defragger, and chkdsk /f either.

it's odd that both our systems started crashing/hanging after a long period of no usage...

Ive run chkdsk as well but to no avail. However, I came to a point whr I am totally clueless now as my gpu suddenly 'uninstalled' during one of the reboot and I had to reinstall using the 'update' function. It was fine for about an hour or so and then it hang again.

I am uncertain whether this is still a Win7 issue or now a hardware issue since Ive tried to reformat my pc earlier and still hang. Same stuff with my mouse still able to move around.

Check power settings on Bios

My PC started hanging out of the blue.
Couldnt figure why as no error no message.
works on safe mode. hangs at boot, some times on windows logo, and sometimes after logged on.

Then after reading this forum I remembered I changed bios power settings from S1 mode to S3 while back. So I changed it back and so far its been fine. My Mobo(intel DQ35JO) is about 3 years older than the CPU(Intel E8400)

I might be able to sum this up for everyone. If you'll will take a notice at windows 7 it loads directx 11 so all you hanging on programs and games might want to see if your video card supports directx 11 most out there don't only a handful do.

This is def a driver issue cause your directx ver isn't supportted by your video cards. I'm surprised some half wit like my self can easly point this out and no one with 100 times the tech info could even see the simplest thing.

Link the move sling blade. Carl see if you can get this working. Carl says Ain't no gas in it. Simplest things always get over looked.

I'm not even sure that makes sense, and no one has reported a "driver mode warning".

I highly doubt these problems have anything to do with DX11, given that windows 7 only requires a DX9 or higher compatible graphics card, and no one has reported they were doing anything that would particularly strain the GPU, or cause DX to do anything out of the ordinary, like cause a system hang. DX 10+ is recommended for gaming and other graphics intensive software, but that isn't being called into question.

Fact of the matter is that the problems people are reporting in this thread might not even be the same, as system hangs can be caused by a whole pile of different stuff, hardware related or software related.

Bottom line is, diagnose your problem properly before investing in new hardware as per Mieng's suggestion.

My experience with this

I bought a new computer for my girlfriend's family for Xmas, Win 7 (64 bit) pre-installed. I feel horrible because they began having real issues with the system and programs not responding - it had run fine since xmas until about 2/20 (right around the same time McAfee trial software expired?). We live many hours away, but we drove up anyway so I could try to fix it up. I think I have it tamed a bit, though I'm not sure the computer is completely good now.

I'm also not a Windows 7 user so my descriptions of things might sound strange. and by the way, this computer is an Acer, with 4 Gb ram, 1 Tb hard disk, win 7 home premium 64 bit (seems like everyone who had trouble with this issue was running 64 bit) on an Athlon 4 core 2.90Ghz

I had read a lot of other people's ideas and experiences, mostly in this thread (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/windows-7-gives-me-not-responding-message-a-lot/ae9468d9-168e-44ef-a54b-b4812f55dc61) and tried so many things suggested there, which has taken me all of the last 32 hours since the computer is so unresponsive.

What finally SEEMS TO HAVE WORKED for me is [[[[[[[[[[[[[turning off AHCI in the bios]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] settings, changing it to IDE mode for the hard disk.

However I did several other things (as suggested in the link above) and maybe the combination of things finally did the trick? Here are a list of those things:

turned off Desktop Management something something Manager service.
turned off Windows Search (Indexing) service
ran scan disk. found several bad blocks and indexes
since McAfee expired, installed Free AVG anti-virus
installed and ran CCleaner
(running in Safe Mode did nothing for me - issues still persisted)

none of the above worked on their own, but now with AHCI turned off, the system seems stable.

I DID have an issue though when the Java Updater needed permissions to run, the system modal messagebox that came up froze the computer after I clicked OK (leaving the screen that black hazey deal for a few minutes). This worries me since I wonder if I haven't really fixed the issue and it will return anytime someone needs to run something with higher permissions(?).

I hope this helps someone or adds to the troubleshooting information for this annoying problem.

If the problem returns I'll suggest they install Linux or if they're really unable to part with Windows, to go down to Windows XP.

Hello! Everyone on the thread.
My windows 7 starts to Lag randomly but, when I log off and Log on again everything works fine and after a few minutes same lag happens. Some Symptoms I am facing are:
- The Progress circle in web browsers starts to lag [Freeze some times in all web browsers: FF, IE, Chrome].
- When I drag and drop items the mouse pointer lags [Freeze some times]
- Mouse pointer freeze randomly for 2 -3 seconds.
- Images in websites starts to load Very slowly.
- Cursor in text editors or notepad start to lag.
- Renaming a file or folder becomes impossble some times because of the cursor lag.

I have done everything I could but nothing helped Even I have reinstalled windows.
I have updated my drivers for Graphic card and all my hardware.

Pleaz HELP I am dying! ! ! !
