Windows 7 Running Slow and Freezing

Alright, so here's the story.
I have a Sony Vaio laptop that uses Windows 7 64-bit.
A few days ago I was working on a paper and after finishing, as opposed to turning the laptop off, saved the paper and let my laptop go into sleep mode. I've done this before and it's never hurt anything, but the next day when I turned my laptop back on it had troubles starting back up. I eventually had to take the battery out and restart it that way. After that, as the week progressed, my laptop just kept lagging more and more. It got to the point where I would just have to let it sit for twenty or so minutes, and then it would work fine from then on out. Knowing something was up, I decided to see if I needed to download any new updates, which I figured was possible since I just got my laptop back from GeekSquad about a few weeks ago for a different problem, and it was behind on updates then since it had been turned off for three weeks.
So, to cut a long story short, I downloaded the "vaio entertainment platform library updater, version 1.0.2.08150" because my Vaio Update was telling me it was important I have it but it couldn't download it for some reason. The install wizard for it told me I needed to restart my computer, and so I did, and when I turned it back on it got stuck on a black screen. Eventually, I took the battery out so it would offer me the option of going into Safe Mode due to improper shutdown. I did, and tried to use "misconfig" to at least get me back to my desktop. After messing with that for a bit, and using "System Restore" to return my laptop to how it was before I installed the update, I eventually could get back to my desktop. My laptop automatically downloaded three new updates using Windows Update, and it went back to that same black screen when I restarted it, so I had to repeat the whole procedure so I could get back to my desktop, which I finally did.
But, despite that, I'm essentially back to the drawing board. It's still horribly laggy, and freezes often. No matter how long I let it sit it doesn't get any better. I have no idea what to do. Thank you for reading this far if you have, and please help me.

What did they fix?

Boot into Safemode - tap the F8 key repeatedly during boot-up.

How is overall system performance in Safemode? Any faster?

Download SysInternals AutoRuns from Microsoft TechNet and SAVE it to your DOCUMENTS folder.

RIGHT-click on Autoruns.exe, select "Run as Administrator". Allow it to scan (status on bottom-left of screen). Save it as an ARN file (default file extension). Zip it up and attach to your next post.

A few questions, please -
1. How old is the system?
2. Did it come with Windows 7 x64?
3. How long does the battery last?
4. Has any hardware been replaced?
5. What is the exact model number? (look on label on bottom of laptop)

Oh, I'd sent it in to GeekSquad to fix a broken hinge.

In Safemode, my laptop works just fine. There's no lag or anything.

I attached the BSOD, but I couldn't add the System Health Report, because it kept giving me "the system cannot find the path specified." So I'm sorry about that.

My system is only about a year old.
It came with Windows 7 x64 already installed.
The battery lasts about three hours.
No hardware has ever been replaced.
The model number is: PCG - 71314L .

Hi -

Remove KIS for now; you can reinstall it later if you wish. You had a BSOD on 5 March 2011 that named KIS as the probable cause.

Use the KIS Removal tool - http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN146

Reboot upon completion. Install MSE - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

Create a system restore point -
START | type create | create a restore point

Run AutoRuns - RIGHT-click on autoruns.exe, select "Run as Administrator"

Click on "Logon" tab. Uncheck the box next to ISBMgr.exe; reboot.

Do you have the original Sony battery?

I've been trying and trying to create a restore point, but it won't let me. It's not even an option in Safe Mode. And when I try it on normal Windows, after taking a very long time to open, it either times out or has an error or won't load at all.

Also, yes, I still have the original Sony battery.

I'm sorry for not being able to follow simple instructions.

I managed to make a restore point and unchecked ISBMgr.exe . When I restarted it, it said it was unable to start. I tried to use the restore point, but when I came back it had restarted itself and now only says "No Operating System Found".

I booted SeaTools, but when it scanned the laptop, it said there was no hard drive found.

If no HDD in BIOS, then Windows cannot find it either.

It appears that your HDD has failed.

What work did the Geek Squad do on the system a few weeks ago?

Oh, I was afraid of that.
When I sent it to Geek Squad a few weeks ago, they didn't actually do any work on it. One of the hinges had broken, and so they sent it off for a price consultation. It started slowing down maybe five or six days after I got it back.

HDD has likely failed.

I would suggest that you re-seat HDD and check the cable.
