Windows 7 Updated and now Keyboard/Mouse don't work

I did the update on Windows 7 on an Asus laptop.

When I get to the Windows login screen, I'm stuck. The keyboard and mouse do not work.

It's Windows related, though, as I can use the keyboard and mouse if I boot up with the recovery disk -- which tells me the only option is to wipe the machine -- or get into the BIOS settings.

I really don't want to wipe the machine if I don't have to.

Any suggestions?

Had this happen a while back. Synaptics touchpad drivers were the culprit. (On a laptop). They must have updated through winupdate. I resolved it by using my laptop's touchscreen to sign in, then using system restore, but that may not be an option if you don't have a touchscreen. Assuming it is a laptop, do you have any external mice/keyboard you can use?

Somehow, we need to get into System Restore, so we can restore to a restore point where the updates weren't installed.

I appreciate the thoughts.

I could get to the restore menu. That's outside windows so the keyboard isn't an issue. Unfortunately, the restore files that were on there failed.

I've got a backup from last week. I'm going to try to hit up someone today to see if they can help.

Oh yes, a backup would help. Is it a system image created with Macrium or the like or created through the default backup interface?

I had it in for diagnostics at a shop. I think the disk is just toast.

I was able to get in through an external mouse and the on-screen keyboard. I'm doing another backup, and then I'll start putting stuff on a new acceptable but not great laptop I just picked up this evening.

I do appreciate your time. I'll check out macrium.

With all due respect, keyboard/touchpad not responding doesn't really point to a toast disk. I don't think you needed to give up on it this quickly, it was probably just a driver issue caused by Windows update. If you invested just a little of the money you spent on a new machine on a USB stick and using another computer to put a bootable media on it you could have had it fixed.
