My computer has not been updated since September 2016 - although I have requested and received updates for MSE. My settings for automatic updates have not been altered. Checked for updates but nothing productive is happening. I tried to follow the reset updates instructions posted on this site but to no avail. Can anyone suggest a solution please? I use a 64 bit operating system. Thanks for your help.

Hi torchwood

Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me what those links actually do, please? Also, what is a CBS log? Sorry, I'm not very technical!

Hi MarATHON,
They both provide more info, the first will show me if its an general operating system problem, the second will tell me if its caused by faulty/corrupt system files.

The CBS log can be found, in C > windows > logs > CBS, (just the top one please Text Document).
Right click on it, create shortcut to desktop, right click on desktop shortcut, created zipped.

You can now attach it in your next reply using the paperclip icon.
this file contains the detail from the 2nd tool i asked you to run.

Hi Roy,

It has been three months since you last wrote to me - my apologies, I found it difficult to follow your instructions! Also, I was told by someone that Microsoft are no longer updating Windows 7 (???) and more or less gave up! However, the recent worldwide ransomware attack made me try again. When running that Microsoft diagnostic tool, which page should I copy and paste to you? I notice that there are a number of tabs with a 'copy' button at the bottom. Also, the second of the links you sent is not from Microsoft - can I trust it?

Hi Bat 1 - I used to link you sent to me and downloaded KB 3172605. The other one, KB 3020369, is apparently already installed on my computer. I followed all the instructions in the link and began checking for updates about 30 minutes ago but nothing seems to be happening, except for the status bar moving. Maybe the Microsoft link you sent to me didn't cover my particular problem?

My apologies! It looks like I spoke too soon. As soon as I posted my previous message, I was told that 28 updates are available (463.7 MB total!) I am now downloading them - 25% complete at the moment. Hoping that nothing goes wrong... I will get back to you if there are further problems. Sorry to be such a non-technical person :o

Thank you both for your assistance in this matter. Bat's solution worked! After following the instructions on the page Bat directed me to, I am now getting automatic updates. Problem solved - thanks for your help.
