I few years ago, I won a touch screen computer, HP 23 d040t (aio touchscreen) from a blog I read. It was a secondary computer as I had a laptop I used. It was a windows 8 which I upgraded to 8.1.

One day I as I was using it, it just shut off for no reason. I tried everything from turning it on, going on forums, as I am doing now and buying a new ac adapter. It was dead. I called HP but they told me it was 17 days from its warranty so they couldn't help me.

A few months ago, in the beginning of may I decided to get someone to fix it. He switched the motherboard with another HP all in one and it seemed to be working just fine. He gave me a 60 day warranty. Right after that I noticed at startup it would do some type of fixing every single time so I decided to "refresh" the computer.

But after that it told me my product key was invalid. I don't know how because my computer came from HP the company. I tried to call the product key people at windows to validate it but she told me my key was blocked and I needed to buy a new one. I told her I don't know why because there is nothing wrong with my key. The computer had also reverted to windows 8 and wouldn't let upgrade to 8.1 because it couldn't authenticate my key.

The last couple of days my computer has a blue screen when it starts up. It tries to repair itself but cannot. It tells me it has error 00x000185.

I don't know what to do? It tells me that it needs to have a dvd or usb to repair its files. I cannot repair it because I don't have a DVD with the computer. Should I just repair it by buying a repair dvd on ebay. Should I just pony up and buy anew authentic windows 10 DVD? I can buy the authentic one but I need to know if this computer is even worth it as its given me nothing but problems.

Hello and welcome bgrr mate the thing is that the new board cannot have the same copy of Windows on it if indeed that is what the "fixer" decided to do because the key for the original install is and will be tied to the original board you cannot swap them without permission from Microsoft and sometimes they will let you use the key again if the board dies for example and other times well they will not. So that is why they are telling you need to get another copy of Windows.
Now depending on what you want 10 will be easy to get but 7 is becoming increasingly difficult to find a key or copy.

Now you could send the dump files for analysis but it would be pointless because we cannot deal with non genuine installs and the person that fixed it should reimburse you the cost of that install and in any case that person who I am assuming knows what he is doing should and would have known he cannot do that.

As for repairing well as above is the reason that is pointless too your only option is to ask Microsoft again if you can use the old key and tell them it is because the board has had to be replaced the old one dying. As I mentioned if they don't let you and well it is all depending sometimes on who you get I have found it the past as to whether they will do that and let you use the key.
IF they do let you use the key then you will need an ISO put onto a bootable DVD or stick and clean install the thing yourself. So can you ask and if they are inclined to let you use the key again post back and we can run through what you will have to do.

Sorry but that's how it is. .
