I have never posted on a forum before so apologies if I am doing this wrong. The problem started when I tried to plug in my (new) iphone to my Dell pc. The device was not detected so I tried to update my itunes software - update failed and I received a Windows 7 error. After searching through multiple forums and trying to download windows utility cleaner, etc - nothing has helped. Also, if I try to run the 'Check for Updates" link on my computer - if NEVER stops searching for updates and there for I cant update anything. Not sure where to start :(

Let's start with the easy stuff :)

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
How to Tell

Thanks for your response - when I click on the link you provided and click save, a 'Trend -Micro office scan box appears and says a 'TRJ SNNR was deleted. My only option is to click OK and then nothing pops up for me to run the MGA software.

Ah so it's probably a volume license, and locked down as well :(

Trend certainly should NOT be treating that file as a Trojan.

Let's try and get some information another way.....

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

CSCRIPT SLMGR.VBS /DLV

post the output

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

I was able to run the command but now I am at a house with no wifi so I am responding on my phone. Is there specific info you want from the result of the command? It says version 6.1.7600.16385 and windows 7 home premium edition. Thank you for you patience!

Interesting... If the company reimaged the machine, they *should* according to the rules, have used a Volume License Key, rather than Dell's own OEM_SLP Key for the job.

Having said that - Home Premium doesn't qualify as a base license for a Volume Upgrade....
This actually makes things easier, since it's not possible for them to lock the system down in the same way as they could a Pro machine :)
I doubt that it's going to be possible for us to do much until you can attach the machine to a newtork of some kind, so I'll give you a big chunk to do now and produce some data.
The order here is rather important - and the first one can take considerable time (4hrs isn't uncommon), so make sure that the machine is plugged in for it.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and proceed to the next step (make a note whether it found anything to fix or not)

Download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and the CBS.log (from your desktop) and attach it to a reply so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

If you still can't get the machine to a network, open the CheckSUR.log file in Notepad, and see what it says in the Summary report ..
I only need the following for the moment
Summary:
Found xx errors
CSI Manifest All Zeros Total count: x
CBS MUM Corrupt Total count: x
CBS Catalog Corrupt Total count: x

(and any corresponding 'fixed' values)

By that lime, I'll be long abed :) - so no hurry, just do things as and when it suits you, and post what data you can, when you can.

Hi GreenHeron32,

You may try the following steps to see if they work for you:

1. Unplug all peripheral devices (iphone, printer, etc) > Uninstall the 'iTunes software' from 'Add and Remove Programs' > Restart the laptop

2. Clean up the bloated 'Software Distribution folder': Software Distribution folder contains 'Windows Update installation files' and if corrupt, may cause repeated issues; this folder can be deleted/renamed using 'Windows Explorer'. You may want to backup the folder on an external media. Deleting the Software Distribution folders will not affect your computer’s functionality. When new 'Windows Updates' are ready for download, a new 'Software Distribution folder' will be created.

- Stop the 'Windows Automatic Updates service'
- Delete the 'Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder' (You may also choose to rename the existing folder 'SoftwareDistribution_old' so that Windows creates a new folder)
- Restart the 'Automatic Updates service'

You may want to use the following commands in an 'elevated command prompt' to perform the above mentioned tasks:
To launch an 'elevated command prompt' click 'Start' > type 'cmd' (without quotations) in the 'Search programs & files textbox > right click 'cmd' (it shows up in search results) > Click 'Run as an administrator' > Click 'Yes/continue' if prompted

(To stop the Windows Automatic Update service): net stop wuauserv (Tap Enter key)
(To delete Software Distribution Folder): del c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution /q /s
(Tap Enter key)
(To restart Windows Automatic Update Service): net start wuauserv (Tap Enter key)

Windows Update related issues are likely to get fixed after this step; if yes, please allow 'Windows' to install the updates before installing the 'iTunes software' again. I found the best available 'iTunes software' that works with 'Windows 7 64 bit':
iTunes 10.7 for Windows 64

Alternatively, you may want to force the 'Windows Updates' manually after fixing the 'Update corruption': Install Windows updates in Windows 7

3. If the issue persists, try to reset 'Windows Update components'; you may use the following MS Fixit: How do I reset Windows Update components?

4. If you still experience issues, you may try another MS Fixit to 'Diagnose and Troubleshoot Windows Update issues': Troubleshoot problems with installing updates - WindowsUpdate_dt000

Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions. I would be glad to assist.

That often means that there is a problem with the TrustedInstaller service.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

NET START TRUSTEDINSTALLER
SC QC TRUSTEDINSTALLER
SC QUERYEX TRUSTEDINSTALLER

post the results, and we'll see what we can see.
Please also open the Event Viewer, and navigate to the Windows Logs.
right click on the Application log and select Save all events.. save as App.evtx
repeat for the System log - save as Sys.evtx.

Compress both files and attach them to your reply -I'll look at it all in the morning (hopefully!)
