Windows Desktop won't load after most recent update

After installing most recent critical update, my computer restarts and I get a balck screen with a little window that says "Setting up personalized settings Desktop Update" or something of the like (may have left a word out) and it never goes away. I can pull up task manager, end task, but explorer.exe also ends. If I then run task explorer.exe, the little window comes back.

I've system restored to before the update and I'm fine, then windows reinstalls the update and I have the same problem. UAC is off, i'm on admin account.

What do?

also, there are 3 available, ATK0110 ACPI UTILITY (which I see has failed repeatedly, KB982670 and KB2286198) Should I hide them all?

ok, I've done this. Is there a problem with the update? Not sure I understand.

Sometimes updates cause problems on some systems. Considering how many systems there are worldwide, it is a minor problem - unless it happens to you. Then it is a BIG problem. The update you are addressing did not cause any trouble for me; but two other earlier updates did.

I have disabled automatic updates as Rich suggested and I install one update at a time. I run my system for a day or two and then I install the next update and so on. That way I am able to identify a specific up date if I have trouble. I hide an update that gives me trouble.

With Restore points enabled, Win 7 creates a restore point with each update. So it is easy to roll back if necessary.
