Solved Windows Explorer Column, "Ext"

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't try it on VuePro since I don't have a problem with it using Directory Opus. But my son's issue with isolating HTML from all other similar extensions was what I did try. I changed html to htm in the htm registry sections of both areas. It had no effect on the search results. Both htm and html continuted to show up in a common group as before.

Thanks, though for the great idea.

Any idea of a release time frame for Win8?

From the second image you uploaded, I figure your default browser is Chrome and the html type is "Chrome HTML Docum..." (I suppose it'd be "Chrome HTML Document", because I don't use Chrome I can't be sure).

You should have searched for "Chrome HTML Docu" and replace it with whatever description you desire. Did you?

Sorry dcampbe. Forget my fix for htm and html type of files. It seems that these web files are specially treated in the registry and CANNOT be simply fixed this way.

I've found this. It doesn't install as such, rather it is a standalone. It doesn't affect the standard W7 explorer in any way.

Explorer++ - A small and fast file manager for Windows

The above image is with the program running in W8, however, as it is a standalone, I get exactly the same result in W7. As there is no way to include an Extension column in the W7 Explorer, this is the best that I can come up with.

Edit. I see that Shawn (Brink) has already suggested this. :)

Yes, he did. I assumed (wrongly) that it was an installed "replacement" for Windows Explorer. As a total stand-alone with the description you give, its a brand new ball game. That means WE users don't have to "switch" anything. Thanks to everybody for chiming in to solve a relatively unknown but important shortcoming of WE.

Problem solved!

I look forward to Wn8 -- I think.

No Joy from Explorer++

Strange, you should be able to search using *.htm just as well.

You might give the free program Explorer++ a try to see if you might like it better over Windows Explorer.

I, too, want an extension column. I tried Explorer++. It does not offer that option. Main advantage I see is better use of real estate.

Ok, here is a solution I found, which will sort by extension, not just "file type": Total Commander. It also has a number of other useful features. It is shareware. This a standalone program, not a modification of Explorer, nor a replacement of Explorer.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but this is how I customized the Type column:

Ex. I had the .7z, .rar and .zip files as “Winrar Files” in the type column

First, remove the file/program association, I use filetypesman , User Choice: > ... > Detach Fle Type

Then, on regedit, under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, I deleted the old key (ex. .rar) and created the key again with an also new default value key

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
-.rar
-- (default) > data > rarfile ***this is also a new value/key***

ext.png

And made the new key also under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
-rarfile
(default) > data > rar ***This is the extension that will appear in the windows explorer Type column***
--shell
---open
----command
(default) > data > "C:\Program Files\Winrar\winrar" "%1"

You can alsocustomize your icons if you add a DefaultIcon key under your new extfile key

Ex.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
-rarfile
--DefaultIcon
(default) > data > C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe,0

extfile.png

And that’s it. I use filetypesman (just open and close then .rar) to “refresh” windows explorer view. So I make a couple of registries (.ext and extfile) for each file type I want to customize. It seems a bit tedious but it’s fairly quick and easy. I think is very useful to sort files by extension and it looks really clean

There's a forum site that specializes in customizations.
Windows 7 - MSFN

There's also the possibility that it can't be done, but try that forum first.
