Solved Windows Explorer Crashes

So C:\my documents has the same problem.. but not in your wifes profile. "There doesnt seem to be a particular folder or file type which causes it.""=> Very unlikely... there must be some file/folder causing it!

Open c:\my documents ... what files do you see (not the folders)? Open a WORD file there, and EXCEL file, mp3 file etc if located there. All in root of c:\my documents. Problems?

Now open a subfolder. Do the same.

Most likely it's a video like MOV, DIVX, WMV, AVI that's causing problems.

How many files (no folders) are in c:\my documents?

Ok - I understand what you are thinking but that is simply not the case. I just opened c:\My Documents and it crashed immediately.

My 2nd attempt, I looked in a folder which contained only JPEGs - it was fine.

Then I looked in a folder which happened to be empty and explorer crashed.

I restarted...........

Went back into C:\ My Docs - looked in a folder which contained both word and pdf docs, and it crashed.

Restarted...........

Went back into C:\my docs - looked in the same folder which previously crashed - it was OK. Opened some word docs and PDFs - no problems.

Went back into C:\my docs and explorer crashed immediately.

Driving me  and doesnt seem to follow any particular trait. No specific folder, no specific file type........

Like you, I would have thought a particular file type or folder was causing this issue but this doesnt seem to be the case.

I thought it was just a problem with "my documents"????

why not simply do this:
  • Copy my documents, my music, my pictures, %userprofile%\desktop .... all your important stuff to c:\transfer\my documents, c:\transfer\my pictures etc.
  • Create a new user account and logon with it
  • Move files from c:\transfer to "my documents", "my pictures" etc of new user.
  • Test if new user works fine.
  • Delete old user account and its files

If this is the case then delete all files/folders in C:\my documents
If that does crash ... do it from your wife's account.

Still same problem in C:\ ? And many other places?

Hi Kaktussoft,

Sorry, I have been away with work so not had the opportunity to spend any time trying to fix this issue.

I have a back up of all my profile docs (and my wifes). If I delete my user profile and create a new one can I just restore those docs to my new profile?

Backup my document, my pictures, my music... et cetera.
Create a new acoount and restore the files in correct folder. Test if all works fine.

After some time you can delete old account (check delete all files or someting like that)

I've been reading through this thread in the hopes of finding a clue as to why my win explorer crashes and restarts if I right click on any drive letter - I do this if I want to eject a usb drive, but its the same result for any drive.
Haven't a useful clue yet though. sfc/scannow doesn't report any problems.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi again,

I have been out of the country for a while - so havent had a chance to test things out. The story so far......

I created a new profile (as administrator) and the problem occurred on the new profile. I'm completely stumped.

Does anyone have any idea how I can identify the problem?

I have a similar problem in which I can be browsing or working from an office program with 1-2 explorer windows open and (not internet) explorer crashes. I have to go and reopen another windows but thats all. Its a hassle when working from files in different folders though.
Any ideas?
