Hi all,

Needing some help diagnosing a problem. I have reviewed a couple of postings on here (obtained via google search) but they do not solve my problem.

3 days ago I updated my windows system (comprised of many updates) and I also installed MS Project 2007. Ever since then I have been experiencing problems with Windows Explorer crashing.

Things I have tried:-

I ran MSConfig and disabled all non-MS services - this didnt solve the problem.

I tried to run Memory Diagnostics (run on restart) - but my laptop doesnt restart properly, it just hangs and windows doesnt start up.

I've ran sfc /scannow and it tells me I've got file corruption, but that it is unable to fix.

It crashes when I look through 'My documents', haven't experienced the crash in any other scenario.....yet.

When win explorer crashes, I dont get the option to 'check for a solution', it just forces a restart.

Can anyone help

Thanks

Perform a system restore to a date prior to problems. And test if system is running fine then.
Install the windows updates one at a time and test again.
Finally install MS PROJECT 2007 again and test again.

Now you know what's causing the problem.

Maybe you have to make a copy first because of access denied.
I'm only interested in the bottom of file... only the sfc output

Hi kaktussoft,

The only system restore point available is one which was automatically created today.

I cant restore beyond that

I have tried to view the cbs log and yes, as you say, access is denied. How do I make a copy so that I can view it/post it?

In windows explorer goto c:\windows\logs\cbs
right click on cbs.log and select copy. Now paste somewhere.

No, didn't delete them, and don't think I disabled them. I thought it was weird when I look at it today....I would have expected to find quite a few.

Is there any way I can enable them? OR do you mean - I might have disabled the function?

Did you access the partition from within linux, winxp? that makes them invalid (deletes them).

computer->rightclick properties->system security. Now you see on which disks it's enabled. Is it enabled on C-drive? configure it as well. How many space used, and what max space?

Hi

File as attached- I think
  • Reboot your system
  • run sfc/scannow again. wait until finished
  • copy cbs.log again
  • post relevant part again (all after starttime sfc command)

Also run this tool: System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008 Method 2: Use the Microsoft Download Center

After it has run post 2 files:
%SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log and %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Im downloading this update as we speak (rubbish broadband speed).

Can you explain how I go about get the two logs you suggest?

Thanks for your help so far
