Solved windows freezing shortly after boot every time

hello,

i am hoping i can find some help here.

i have had my computer running just fine for over a year now. a few days ago windows would start to completely freeze within 1 to 2 minutes after startup. all usb devices go dead so the mouse won't move and i can not shut the computer down unless i press the reset button or hold the power button to turn it off.

i think i can rule out hardware (except the boot drive?) because i have a dual boot setup with two windows installations on two separate hard drives. the other installation does not freeze. the problematic windows installation is on a samsung 840 SSD(120GB).

for troubleshooting purposes i have also started windows with all usb devices unplugged, but still the same. also have i reinstalled all the drivers (except video card) from my asus dvd. i did not uninstall them first, not sure i should have done that maybe?

safe mode works without issues. am i guessing right that since safe mode works it must be an issue with some driver?

i would greatly appreciate if someone could help me. please !!

Try a system restore from a date prior to the issue.

unfortunately i have the creation of system restore points function disabled... so i have to reinstall windows you reckon?

with that guide I have been able to narrow it down to what is causing the freeze. it was not a service per se, though. it seems that the ASUS AISuite3 fan control software is causing the problem. disabling some of the ASUS services on startup caused the AISuite to not start and that is how I figured that this program is the issue.

with normal startup if I close AISuite3 right after windows boot the computer will not freeze. I would like that software to be running, of course.

so what I did was to uninstall AISuite/Thermal Radar and installed it again. however, windows will freeze up again. so once again I am out of ideas... could this be a sign there is a deeper issue somewhere in my windows installation?

Let me have a think, I'm out at the moment so I may be tomorrow when I get back. Can you install Fan Control on its own without Thermal Radar?

sorry i should not have used two different terms. Thermal Radar is the fan control i was referring to...

Maybe SpeedFan will help? Wait for a confirmation though, I don't own an ASUS.

never mind, guys. i tried a repair via upgrade option, did not help. so i have installled everything from scratch. with that installation the problem is now history. thanks anyways for all your input!
