Windows Home Server 2008 R2 Vail

My computer running Windows Home Server Vail (Acer Veritom M464) has been up and running for a while now.

I've managed to sort out all the problems with it bar one. It refuses to show up on networks unless you look for it manually and type in the IP address etc.

When I go into device manager the ethernet driver (the one on the motherboard) is installed but there are three (that's all of them) WAN Miniports that refuse to start (IKEv2, L2TP, SSTP).

I believe the problem may be they are running on 32bit drivers but this is not forté.

Windows update and the automated driver update thing both throw up the same dodgy drivers.

Just so you are aware the Ethernet networking driver is an Nvidia nForce one.

If you require any more information or want me to be more specific please just ask.

On a related note is anyone aware of a way to add a Windows Home Server Vail (or Just a 2008/R2) shared printer to Mac when the server does not show up in a workgroup.

I honestly don't have a clue, I didn't even configure them. They are just there not working, not letting me do anything with them.

It's not that they aren't doing thy're job it's that they won't start with the error 10 message in the driver properties and aren't doing they're job.

Usually it's A/V software that causes these types of problems but with VAIL being beta and all there are quite a few bugs still to be worked out.

Maybe this VAIL problem solver will help you find out what the problem is.

Thanks for the link, I'll have a look through.

Although Vail itself is in beta, the operating system it's based on is not (Server 2008 R2) and I would imagine Microsoft wouldn't change anything (major at least) to do with networking between this and R2; however it could still well be bug.

There is one strange bug where you need to set the timezone to pacific time before the install "even if your zone is different" otherwise a bunch of strange stuff happens.

I think I'm going to have to try and download this new server and see what it's all about.

I will, I experienced that bug (I'm on installation 3.0 because of it ).

It's a great OS, just make sure you have enough HDD space and that you have 64 bit Windows 7/Vista drivers for the system you install it on.

Sounds good osholt, I'm in the process of installing an SSD into my main rig so I can use one of my two 250GB drives in my Dell machine that will soon have VAIL installed on it.

Just so you know Vail insists on wiping all HDDs (not just the boot drive) during installation.

I had this problem originally and got round but just unplugging the non boot drive .

That was my first proper experience with a server OS so I guess that is pretty standard to wipe all drives.

Yes I noticed that it insisted on wiping the drive and that it also requires a minimum of 160GB. I like how you can access the server and work on it from another networked machine. Should be interesting to see how it works. Can't wait to install the SSD on this system.

An SSD for a Windows Home Server? I don't really see the point. You would be limited by the gigabit speeds of the network and it's a box that you won't be rebooting hardly at all...nor running any applications from it. So, what am I missing?
