If this happens only because your drive is attached, then have him boot into the WIn7 disk to wipe your drive of boot code using Diskpart Clean Command.

Tell him to be sure to choose the correct drive, even unplug his drive if necessary for this procedure.

You can forward this thread to him to read these posts by using the Thread Tools at the top.

He no longer has the SSD, he brought it back to me.

On another note, the disk from Dell arrived today, horay! It only took 3 weeks to arrive, being posted from inside my own country. Really efficient.

So when I get the chance, I will just do the wipe, then post back to let you know how it goes.

I am at last about to attempt the reinstall. I have the SSD in the SATA connection at the side of the PC like we did.

Before proceeding, should I remove the 4GB HDD that is currently plugged in?

I have removed the Wacom tablet I had plugged into the back USB port and also took out the WiFi adapter I have in the front USB port. So I just have the mouse and keyboard connected.

Yes, remove it, only DVD drive and SSD. My USB devices didn't cause any problems, but I guess it won't hurt to unplug them.

I am just reading Greg's Clean Install guide and the part about the COA sticker. I don't see any sticker on my PC, even underneath it. But I will go ahead and attempt the install from the DVD as on the disc sleeve there is a sticker that says:

"The COA contains the product key code, which might be required to complete the operating system setup."

It says it 'might' be needed, I'll soon find out.

I'm not getting a message saying to press any key to boot from DVD. Should I alter the boot order in the BIOS first to have the DVD drive as the first option in the list?

You can do that or just use the Boot Menu key.

If you are asked for key while installing, look at the back once again. Open left cover and look inside too if you can't find it at the back.

OK thanks. I used F12 and it gave me these options. As Greg was saying to do the UEFI option, when I select that a screen appears with 'Choose an operating system to start.' On this screen the option is:

Windows Setup [EMS Enabled]

This isn't what I want is it?? Here is a screen of the boot options after pressing F12:

Yes, you want the UEFI DVD drive choice.

If it gives you a menu with Windows Setup then choose it. What happens?

Windows Boot Manager will set itself as the first boot device during install and needs to stay there as it is what boots a UEFI install and not the hard drive.

Thanks Greg, when I selected the option, the following screen was the 'Windows is loading files' white bar at the bottom of the screen, which finished progressing. Next was the 'Starting Windows' screen.

After selecting language and license terms, I clicked on the Custom option and now have the drive selection screen. Just to be clear here, should I delete all the drives I see by going into the Drive options?

At the moment I see:
Disk 0 Partition 1: System Reserved - 100 MB (Free Space 39 MB)
Disk 0 Partition 2: 238.4 GB (Free Space 63.9GB)

You don't need System Reserved (only good for Bitlocker encryption). It doesn't hurt to be there but since you are doing this now, just remove it.

OK, so just delete both of these? Then install to an unallocated space?

OK, and now it's on the 'Expanding Windows Files' but going really slow. Took about 5 minutes to reach 10%. I'll let it run its course anyway.

Edit: maybe this is normal, I'm not sure!

OK, it seems to have installed, I am at the desktop now. I just have to install WiFi adapter, then try grab all of the specific drivers. I will give an update tomorrow, I will be heading off in a few mins. Main aim is to test the SSD with the benchmark.

Please stick with the steps in Clean Reinstall Windows 7 which should have answered your question about deleting partitions during install. The steps for drivers are so important they are printed in red so please don't use XPired methods for a driver-complete OS.

You will get and keep a perfect install to the exact extent you stick with the steps, tools and methods in that tutorial.

OK, I will stick to that, thanks. I had just installed a chipset driver that is on the dell driver downloads for my specific model, hopefully this is OK. I will carefully try to follow your steps moving forward.I am going to head off now as it's later now. I will keep you posted in the next day or so.

Yes, chipset drivers should be first. Anyway, I won't interfere with the order in tutorial. Waiting for that AS SSD bench!

It tells me I have 195 important updates to install. Is it recommended to install all of these? Also, there are a few optional ones.

Yes, it is important to keep the OS up-to-date. Optional can wait, you don't need them at the moment.
