This has been an ongoing problem for the last few days on two computers. Windows Update is not working properly. I have tried some suggestions online but nothing seems to be working.

Is anyone else getting this problem? Any ideas?

Hi meridius21,

I have tried some suggestions online but nothing seems to be working.

If you could tell us what you have tried so far perhaps we can come up with something.

I hope this helps!

I followed your guidelines with results as follows:

1. SURT - In the first instance hung at around 75% complete so I did it again. HDD must have been running but no progress bar. I got a bit fed up with this....

2. sfc/ scannow - "Windows Resource protection did not find any integrity violations"

3. Error codes - see attached

4. CBS log - see attached

I hope that some of the CBS log information helps for your analysis.

SURT may take a while to complete. Patience is a virtue when dealing with computer issues.

In perusing your CBS.log I'd recommend a repair install.

I am wondering why this problem has happened to two separate Windows 7 computers at the same time.

There was an update that kept repeating itself around 11 April (KB4093118). I had to hide it so it didn't keep installing. At the same time System Reserved is 5% fragmented but not on the other computer.

Hi meridius21,,

How to Update Windows 7 All at Once with Microsoft's Convenience ...
Installs more than 200 updates, providing you install the prerequisites first.

The updates that Snick was talking about are:

KB3020369 - Servicing Stack Update - April 2015.
KB3125574 - Convenience Rollup Package - May 2016.
KB3172605 - Functional Update Rollup (THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT) - July 2016.
KB3179573 - Functional Update Rollup - August 2016.

Then either:

KB4054518 - Security Monthly Quality Rollup Update – December 2017.

...Or:

ALL the Security Only Quality Updates from October 2016 to December 2017.

I hope this helps!

If you have restore point prior to your Win Update issue, you could try system restore. Most of the time, when you need to use M$ system restore it fails.

Yes, I'm aware of the repetitive update offerings, as I received same. M$ has since corrected the multiple offerings.

Windows Update not working on both your computers may not be for the same reason.

Would you please inform us the steps, and/or programs, you have already tried to resolve your issue. It would make troubleshooting a little easier.

This is some of what I tried:

- Run Windows Update Troubleshooter in Control Panel

- Run WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab

- Run WindowsUpdateAgent-7.6-x64

Amongst other suggestions I found online including to check LAN settings is set to automatically detect settings in Internet Explorer.

I wasn't too sure how to check if my internet security suite is blocking Windows Update although I can't see why it would suddenly do this.

Thank you!
Work on one computer with update issue at a time.
Disabling your security suite temporarily (until reboot) is usually sufficient & try the stand alone installer.
I don't believe that will permit the install though, at least not on the computer you posted the CBS log for.
Would you please try the SURT Tool again and post CheckSUR.log which is a temporary file located at:
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS
Don't need CheckSur persist log

Be patient and let it complete, it may take a while!

Here's a repetitive error from CBS log:

CBS log also indicates you have multiple language packs installed. Is that so?

Thanks for the link townsbg,
Haven't read that particular article before now. DISM doesn't apply to win7 but the other troubleshooting methods do, which I'm familiar with!
Interested in what SURT Tool results, CheckSUR.log says. I'm thinking corrupt/missing files. If that's the case and not Componet Hive Corruption, I should have the necessary replacements in my 400k repository.

Thanks for teaching me what I sometimes lack which is patience!

KB947821 finally installed this morning after some time. Prior to that I tried disabling my Internet Security suite and running Windows Update but no luck. After installing KB947821 I ran Windows Update twice and still the same error code.

Officially the only language I can directly see is English (United Kingdom). It is possible that an old VPN installed some language packs. Is this a problem?

New CBS Log is attached.

I had previously thought of a Restore Point solution but was looking into a different route as I am having the same problem on two computers, but am only working on this one for now.

System Restore gives me date options from 05-03/05/2018 and then back on 10/01/2017 but that appears to be the main clean restore point. I don't normally keep an os without a clean install for over a year so this is already an achievement!

Hi Snick,

DISM doesn't apply to win7...

I have used DISM on Windows 7 and it works both offline and online!
You just need to download and install the Windows AIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit) for Windows 7.

I hope this helps!

Yes WindowsUpdate.diagcab (if this is what you mean...) works in Windows 7. I just ran it now but the result is the same error code as before.

Have you seen this? I had use method 3 to disable and enable WU on my 8.1 virtual machine. How to Fix the Windows Update Error 8024402F

I am going through some other points now... Yes I have gone through this and varying the criteria in Windows Update just to make sure. Still the same error msg...

Also Windows Update says I have no hidden updates but that can't be right as I am sure I have hidden updates since 10/01/2017!...

Yes Paul, you are correct, I was experiencing a little Brain-Fade last night. Too much/many hours studying & not enough Zees most likely. It's not native to win7 but you can install it via Win AIK

M$ quite often re-issues updates, and they remove them from your hidden updates, as I've experienced this many times in the past. Gotta' love M$!

Regarding SURT Tool, you didn't upload the log! I need that to see if/what files you have corrupt/missing and/or Componen Hive corruptions (hopefully not). Would you please try the SURT Tool again and post CheckSUR.log which is a temporary file located at:

This is the log I should have posted this morning (see attached). I will run it again and only post if it shows an error.
