Solved Windows Update broken on my laptop

3 possibly related problems.

  1. I tried doing a Win10 upgrade on my laptop using the Media Creation tool. It hung during the "Checking for Updates" phase. I canceled the update and it hung in the cleanup phase. I eventually rebooted. Win7 seems to be ok ... except ...
  2. I noticed that we have not installed updates since December! (We rarely use the laptop and I guess we just haven't checked.) There were over 70 fixes to download and install. But the download hung at 0%.
  3. To reduce the number of fixes to download I undid the option to download fixes for Microsoft non-Windows products. That reduced the number of fixes to 44, but the download still hung at 0%. And the option to include non-Windows fixes is gone. The web page that supposedly installs Microsoft Update no longer has the option to install. Can I get this back?
The first thing I did was go back to a week old Restore Point. And then a month old Restore Point. Neither helped. Maintenance downloads still hang at 0%. Win10 maintenance still downloads and installs to my desktop so I don't think this is a problem with the Microsoft maintenance server.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I know the smartest thing would be to proceed with the Win10 installation and forget the missing Win7 maint, but I'm not sure how to do that if the upgrade process doesn't work.

How long did you allow for the Updates to start downloading. At present Windows Updates have been taking an eternity to search & download Updates, so leave it trying to Update for a few hours.

I probably did not wait long enough - certainly nowhere near an eternity. But I did finally manage to get the Win10 upgrade done by telling the process to bypass installing maintenance. (I have no idea how I found that option; I think maybe it's available only if wireless connectivity is used, but that's just a guess.) Anyway, not being able to download Win7 maintenance is no longer a problem. I guess that means this should mark this thread "solved" since there is no "bypassed" option. :)

That's interesting, not that I want to upgrade to Windows 10, but about " bypass installing maintenance "

Well, don't make too much out of it. That means installing the maintenance after the installation rather than during it. That let me get to Win10, but it just delays the pain.
