Windows Update comments & questions no Window update issues

Why are windows update so huge? On mine, I noticed 104.7 mb for required security updates.

I also noticed some other optional updates for windows 7, I am :shock:ed to see those with Windows 7 mainstream supported ended. I thought Microsoft Security essential would be the only one shown in the Optional updates and nothing else. I know windows 7 gets security updates till 2020.

Well... Better not complain about it, now mainstream support has ended.

I'm at near 1Gb of Optional updates & Hotfixes since i installed SP1, and for security updates i do not find those in excess.

Updates used to be a lot smaller.


This maybe the reason for optional updates.
I think Microsoft wants to keep windows 7 updated, so it will be ready for the free upgrade if people want windows 10. After the release of windows 10, I think there will be lot less in the optional updates for those that keep windows 7. JMO.

yeah...Windows 7 will fade for those who have the desire to keep that one (as i might). Since so manies Windows 7 SP1 OEM licenses are pre-installed, guess some will upgrade their machine if its still in a good working condition.

My thought is to keep my actual custom build with Windows 7 that will have by the time Windows 10 is RTM, enough years, then go for a retail Windows 10 on another build to avoid, too, hardware compatibilities.

You'll generally find that the biggest updates are the .NET ones - it's not unusual for the compressed files to be 30-40MB. (and 300 MB uncompressed!). The next biggest are usually the IE CUmulative Updates (20-40MB) - most others are less than 15MB.
64-bit computing has necessarily increased the size of the files required by around 50%, since it often contains two versions of the same executable file.

Bear in mind that many times it's not necessary for Windows to download all of the files in any given update, since they may already be present on the system - that's one of the reasons why MS switched to Component Base Servicing.
