Solved Windows update has made my computer laggy

I have a laptop running Win7 Home Edition and ever since the last automatic update my computer has been really laggy. It used to run very smoothly with only a bit of lag on start-up - now, it takes forever for the machine to be ready to run any programs, it hangs for minutes when I start it, and it will start hanging while I use it, causing the programs to stop responding and everything to be laggy for minutes on end. It's annoying that a computer which used to work exemplary suddenly must be bogged down by such a thing as a windows update.

I'm almost entirely sure that the update is to blame. I use my computer every day and I never had any trouble before that update was installed. When I had first installed the update my computer would hang and not respond at all, so I had to boot it in safe mode and use a system restore from an earlier date, in this case the 6th of November. The computer worked fine once that was done. I then tried to install the update again (thinking maybe something went wrong the first time) and this time my computer would eventually run my programs, but with the result as described above - it hangs a lot.
I tried to use a system restore again, but sadly the previous restore point was gone, replaced with restore points only after the update.

If anyone know how to fix this, I'd be really grateful. I'm really annoyed by all this.

Hello KarenB88 & welcome to our Forum,

* As mentioned by legacy7955 it would be most helpful to us if you provided the KB reference number of the update.

* If you list your System Specs it is also of benefit to us in better helping you.

* Have you checked in Event Viewer?
Type eventvwr in search.
Go to the Windows Logs > Application / System > in the left hand column.
Note anything in red that relates to the problem.
Please record the event ID, and the Source Code and tell us what they are.

* Please advise what Security Software you run on your System.

* Did your computer come with a preinstalled Anti Virus Program?

*Do you do your Computer Housework on a regular basis?
For example...
Check Disk / Error Checking
Defragment
Disk Clean Up
Temporary Files Removal

Thanks for the replies :)

Just a moment ago windows popped up with another update message, telling me that my computer will restart automatically in 15 minutes to finish installing important updates...I don't know what's going on with all these updates...

I went to look at my installed updates. I think the one(s) causing trouble were installed on 11-11-2011. The KB's are as follows: KB976932, KB2620704, KB2617657, KB2588516 and KB2641690

I'll see if the new update that's apparently being installed fixes anything, else I'll try removing these. Thanks for showing me where to do this. :)

Right now my security is whatever windows provides and an outdated version of McAfee that came preinstalled with my computer.

I'm looking at the event log and trying to figure if there's anything related. It seems to have logged several errors in the last month.

My DxDiag log (sorry for the text wall, but I figured better include everything as I'm not sure what I'm looking for):

Alright...removing those updates didn't do anything, except send the computer into some weird configuration-restart cycle which took a while. When I got access again there was no change to my problem, but 50+ updates dated today had been installed. I started going through removing each of the updates dated today, must have removed about 20 so far. And now I just realized that a watermark appeared in the lower corner of my screen saying "Windows 7 - Build 7600 - This copy of windows is not genuine"

This is getting better and better...

Whenever updates are installed or uninstalled Windows has to go through configuration procedures, which can sometimes be quite lengthy and involve a rrestart.

Removing these updates may have de-activated Windows. If you restart your computer Windows should activate and the message should disappear.

If it doesn't, I'll advise you further.

The non-genuine problem is probably caused by a race condition, and will disappear if you leave the system to stand for a while and get its breath back.
If not, please post an MGADiag report - To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

KarenB, once you have fixed the problem with Windows not recognizing that it is genuine, you can look into using Microsoft's antivirus software if you are unwilling to purchase one. Microsoft provides their antivirus software for free to genuine Windows users. Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

Last evening I left my computer on stand-by because I had to go out, didn't want it to close down and cause lag on start-up, and I wasn't finished removing updates. I came back later in the evening and continued but the computer lag was as bad when I signed in as if I'd started it up all over again.

Then while I was removing the updates, the computer froze completely. It's done this a few times before as well while I've been having this problem. I tried to open the task manager and a warning popped up that my computer was having trouble and I should wait or shut it off manually on the on-off button - again, not a first time occurance, so I shut it off.

Then I tried to open it. Black screen. Every time. I can get into the BIOS, but that's it. The OS appears completely dead.

Are you able to start the computer in Safe Mode?

If so, the chances are the problem is driver related and quite possibly the video driver.

Please check this Microsoft article for further help: Why is my screen black when I start Windows 7?
