Windows Update - Reset

How to Reset Windows Update in Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8

   Information
This will show you how to reset Windows Update view update history, and how to reset and re-register Windows Update Components if you are having a problem updating with Windows Update.

OPTION ONE

To Only Reset Windows Update History

   Note
Resetting Windows Update using this option will clear the view update history details list (cache).

This will not actually uninstall any of your currently installed Windows Update. They will just not be listed anymore. Any new Windows Update installed after the reset will show up in the view update history list as normal though.

1. Click/tap on the Download button below to download this file below.
Reset_Windows_Update_History.bat

Download

2. Save the .bat file to your Desktop.

3. Right click or press and hold on the downloaded .bat file, and click/tap on Run as administrator.

4. If prompted by UAC click/tap on Run, then Yes/Continue (if administrator) or type in administrator's password (if standard user).

5. You will now see an elevated command prompt open and run. When it's finished, it will close automatically.

6. If opened, close and reopen Windows Update to verify that it has been reset.

7. Resetting the Windows Update history will also restore the default language packs being listed in Windows Upate again in the Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise editions after you check for updates next.

OPTION TWO

To Reset and Re-register Windows Update Components

NOTE: This option is the Windows version of: How do I reset Windows Update components?. It will reset Windows Update Components and re-register the BITS files and the Windows Update files to help fix Windows Update errors. This option will not clear the view update history details list as it does in OPTION ONE above.
1. Click/tap on the Download button below to download this file below.
Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components.bat

Download

2. Save the .bat file to your Desktop.

3. Right click or press and hold on the downloaded .bat file, and click/tap on Run as administrator.

4. If prompted by UAC click on Run, then Yes/Continue (if administrator) or type in administrator's password (if standard user).

5. You will now see an elevated command prompt open and run. When it's finished, it will close automatically.

6. Restart the computer afterwards to apply.

7. If this still does not help, then run the Microsoft Fix it tool here:
How do I reset Windows Update components?

OPTION THREE

To Reset and Re-register Windows Update Components AND Reset Update History in One Easy Click

This option combines OPTION ONE and OPTION TWO above in one .bat file.

1. Click/tap on the Download button below to download this file below.
Reset_Windows_Update_Full.bat

Download

6. Restart the computer afterwards to apply.

7. If this still does not help, then run the Microsoft Fix it tool here:

Would you ever consider adding a "Pro" version, which re-registers all 114 WU related .dlls, and does everything here: How do I reset Windows Update components?

That would actually be quite useful, as it would merge together the WU Components reset, and the WU Modules Reset. The WUM Reset only registers files, and has no repercussions, such as deleting history. Or is there some reason which I am missing!

Thanks!

I think this is the lot:

I was thinking something along the lines of this. It is very rudimentary, and does not even have all of the regsvr32 commands silenced. I was just wondering what the issue was, because there is something I don't understand, hence the need to learn!

Hello Niemiro,

I shall have a play with it later tonight to see what I may be able to do. :)

Don't spend too long on it, especially if it is unimportant or you are busy, I just wondered!

Any idea if this (both I and/or II) are safe to use on Windows 2008 R2 Ent x64? Please let me know. If I get overly ambitious and try it myself I'll post back and let everyone know if it works okay. I'm betting it will...

Thanks,

Hello Drewmann, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I've never tried it on Windows 2008 R2, but it's core is suppose to built off of Windows 7, so it may work. If you decide to try it, be sure to create a backup before doing so.

Thanks Brink, for the quick reply and for all the help and assistance you offer everyone on this Site! Definitely appreciated.

I saw an advertisement for RegistryBooster 2011 on this Site and figured I'd play it a bit safe (hopefully) and try that first. My problems all started with a flakey/slowly dieing PowerSupply (now replaced) and I believe it corrupted my Registry during several crashes on my 2008 R2 x64 Box. Now, when I run the "System Update Readiness Tool" and look at the CheckSur.log in \CBS dir I get a ton of the following Errors;

CBS Watchlist Package Missing 0x80070002 Microsoft-...

and,

CSI Missing Deployment Key 0x00000000 microsoft.r...

I definitely agree with you, it's the same Core System between Windows 7 x64 and 2008 R2, so if the RegistryBooster repair does not work then I'll try these Batch files after that. Either way, I'll Post back to let everyone know what worked and what didn't...

One quick question that I don't see clearly stated yet in this Forum; does method "I" (reseting Windows Update) actually cause Windows update to believe it needs to reinstall ALL updates since the original install? I know it does not uninstall any of the updates, but does it cause WU to believe it's never been updated and to subsequently want to install all updates (even over top of the same update/file versions) again? If this is the case then I believe it would solve at least half my current issues.

Thanks again for all you help!
DrewMann
