Solved Windows Update SP1 (KB2538243) keeps failing with code64 C

Hi,

I'm having a hard time getting this Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 redistributable package installed. More often than not I also have an update to be installed when I shut the computer down but seems like it never gets properly installed. I don't know it it's the same update or something else.

This is the only update i have pending and I've tried numerous Fix It -solutions, read the following threads:

and found no solution. I haven't tried installing the update without Windows Update because I don't know which one of the files in the next link is correct for my computer.

My OS is in Finnish but hopefully you'll get some information about the screenshot as well. I also did the corrections on the next link but can't remember where from my conputer I got the error message in question.

"0x80070057" error message when you back up files in Windows 7

There are a huge number of this type or thing in the background CBS.log data.

I suspect that this may relate to corruption in the SoftwareDistribution folder, or possibly a file in the WBEM repository.

Run the WU reset tool in its default mode, then reboot http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683 and see if that helps. You'll need to do a manual scan for updates afterwards.
If not, run it again, in Aggressive mode, and reboot - see if that works.

I chose to reboot after using that Fix It and the rebooting took a lot of time. When the OS finally opened i got the message that the computer had restarted after an unexpected shutdown.

I ran the Fix It again in agressive mode and this time the reboot completed without any oddities except for the long time it took. WU had lost all info about udate history and I searched the updates manually. I found the same update but failed to install it and got the same error message again.

All in all, no changes. Any other ideas?

Please post a new CBS.log (you'll have to copy it to the desktop, and then zip it) and we'll see if there's anything new there.

Losing the history isn't too much of a problem, and is normal with this Fixit - all current updates are still installed, and can be found in the Installed Updates listing.

do I need to redo system readiness tool and sfc scan from command prompt before getting the new cbs log?

Nope - the log is continually updated by the system anyhow.

Ok. For some reason the zipped CBS file was quite a bit smaller than the first so this time I could upload it here directly.

There's no new clues there - and the errors go back as far as the logs do
I have a feeling that this is going to turn out to be a registry problem - but I have to admit to not really knowing where to start looking.

I need to have alook at your COMPONENTS registry hive



Please copy theC:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop andthen compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site(preferably Dropbox or SkyDrive) and post a link.

Don't know if this is of any use but the file icon in the folder had the logo of Mass Effect 2, which I currently have installed on the computer. I have no idea why this is but it seems a bit weird.

Nah - if there's anything blocked, it's eluding me
I can see no obvious errors there, either.

Let's check something else -
Please run a Check for updates - then attempt installing only the oldest update found (SP1 if that's the oldest) - them post the following files

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log
C:\Windows\setuperr.log


... as well as any log file that the install tells you about

The update in question is the only one I can find at the moment using WU. Tried installing it again with same result as allways. Here are the logs. Setuperr is an empty file (0kb) so I coulnd't even upload it.

Sorry - I thought I'd replied to this

There's no clues in the reports that I can see -The only thing I can think of is to uninstall the VC++ 2008 from the Programs listing, reboot twice, and then reinstall it using a fresh download, and try updating it again - keeping careful notes!

I finally managed to get the update installed. I noticed that WU had found some new updates and just tried installing them all at once and for some reason even the one that's been causing some headache got installed. I'll attach the WU log file here so ppl can see what updates I was installing. Thx for the help in any case
