Solved Windows update taking forever

Aren't some people having trouble with windows 10 updates as well?

Not sure about the 10 updates Groze, I've only tried 10 in a VM and didn't have any problems updating then.

Ok I'm about to head to bed and will let it check overnight, hopefully it will be done in the morning.. I will get back tomorrow.

Also, I tried updating the windows client and I cannot even download updates manually because it gets stuck at "searching for updates on this computer"

Logo, set your updates to "Never check" then disable the Windows update service in Services.msc a reboot may be needed. You should then be able to install the Update Client and then restart the Update service.

Wow, things are really getting ridiculous with updates. I'm just going to forget about them. Unfortunately, I need to update another household machine. Would I have these problems if I just stuck to security updates?

You can manually download updates here using IE:

Microsoft Update Catalog

Latest Windows Update Client (needs .NET Framework 4.6.1)

Microsoft Update Catalog

Note: If manually installing Windows Update Client it's best to run a commmand with /wuforce switch.

Example:

"C:\Users\Username\Desktop\Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3075851)\AMD64-all-windows6.1-kb3075851-x64_5a748d6f403e548c985c81778c1c8e5967bf7c58.msu" /wuforce

Replace full path to file (the part between the quotes) with the path to where you saved the installer file.

After installation reconfigure or re-apply Windows Update settings then disable Windows Update Service. When you've finished using your machine - shutdown overnight. Next day power up and re-enable Windows Update Service. Check WU Settings. Reboot.

Run an update check and leave it running until it completes.

Thanks it installed successfully! I will let it check now.

Only problem is my laptop keeps powering off overnight.... It didn't do this before I reinstalled windows

Sounds like you need to change your power options as the laptop is going to sleep.

Hi,

No I notice my power options are set to be fine. I think the issue might be my laptop overheating.. probably because the windows updates are taking up the power, causing it to overheat..

I'm installing the updates now, the latest windows update client did fix my issue by the way, so I will mark this as solved.

Welp..

No luck.. only worked once and now I'm stuck again. I'm just going to go to Windows 8.1 because I honestly do not have time for these jokes being played on us.. Good luck to you all and thank you for the support

Ok, no Dell 8.1 OEM for my laptop. I'm going to try to re-install windows 7 and do some research before I even turn on the updates. I'll get back in a little bit.
