Greetings all...

I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a new system that I put together.

I've had no problems with it, other then my old DVD playback software was no longer compatible.

No problem, as I was able to play and watch my DVD's on the included version of Windows Media Player 12.

That was working great for about three weeks. However, it now has suddenly stopped working and I've not been able to determine why. Now when I try to play a DVD, or any video related file such as an MPEG or AVI, etc... Now when ever I try to play any such thing, my WMP12 locks up for a moment, then my screen goes all garbled, then my system flashes a Blue Screen error for a split second and then immediately reboots!

I can't even hit the pause key to get it to stop on the blue screen; but when Windows comes back up it displays its usual message about "windows has recovered from an error, click here for details, etc, etc..."

When I click for the details, I am given the following information...

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 116
BCP1: FFFFFA80085FC010
BCP2: FFFFF88003FB302C
BCP3: 0000000000000000
BCP4: 0000000000000002
OS Version: 6_1_7600
Service Pack: 0_0
Product: 256_1
Now to be perfectly honest, I am completely stumped on this. In the past I've been able to solve/resolve most of my BSOD's. However, I've had more experience working with Windows XP and this is my first BSOD on Windows 7.

When I try to Google these error codes, I get nothing.

I tried downloading RealPlayer to see if I can play my DVD's and, it does the exact same thing.

Someone suggested to me that the problem was WMP itself, and that it had something to do with ATI; as I'm using a straight AMD build with a Radeon HD 5850... However, what exactly, it had to do with ATI, they could not tell me.

They suggested I try using a program called Media Player Classic Home Cinema x64; and to install this codec, and it would solve my problem.

However, that did not, resolve the problem and that software, also results in the exact same BSOD.

So!

I need more help!

My system is working fine, I can run all my games and push Prime95 for hours on end with no errors... I just had Prime95 running for 5 hours straight without a single error... so I know there is nothing wrong with my Hardware and my system is working great!

But every time I try to watch a DVD movie, or any other video... the whole damned thing Blue Screens!

Ah yes.. missed that link and it was right in front of me.

So just gather said files into a Zip and attach to a post is instructed?

How do I view those files? My error report details referred me to one specific .dmp file, but I could not open it or view it because Windows reported that it was an unknown file type.

I'll make a post with those dmp files later tonight when I get home!

Hopefully one of you can help me figure out why my WMP 12 keeps blue screening, when I try to play any type of video, including DVD's... :(

Looks like your video card drivers for sure. Uninstall the Catalyst suite, and install only the driver itself. If the problems persist, try an older driver.

I think I may have resolved it...

It was the Overclock Profile that I had configured with my MSI Afterburner software, for my Radeon HD 5850 card...

I had been sitting here trying to figure what changes had been made to my Video Card drivers at about the time this problem started. This machine is barely a month old, and I started out with the Catalyst 10.3 Drivers.

In fact, the problem started, while I was still using the Catalyst 10.3 drivers, and I didn't bother installing Catalyst 10.4 until a week after 10.4 was originally released, just a few days ago actually when I first installed 10.4.

So...

I had not made any changes to my Vid Drivers, when this problem started. It just seemed to suddenly start one day, for no apparent reason...

But, then I suddenly realized that, shortly before I first noticed the problem, a few days before that, I started setting up several OC Profiles on my MSI Afterburner. Ever since then, I've had my machine booting to Windows with MSI Afterburner automatically clocking my 5850, up to a 5870's stock settings.

I just now opened Afterburner, and reloaded my default profile.

Now Windows Media Player is working just fine!

Interesting!

Now...

If only I can find my Iron Man DVD that seems to have misplaced itself from its case!
