Firefox began malfunctioning, unsure of addon related. Usually when I had lots of tabs open. It would freeze for a few seconds, with or without momentary hdd thrashing, then return to responsiveness, but become unstable. Some of the tabs would be black, requiring reloading, sometimes it would fix that tab but often it would not. Sometimes it would lead to a crash and sometimes I had to open task manger and kill the process because it lost responsiveness. But every time the rest of my computer retained responsiveness and I was able to resume my firefoxing after restarting it.
Last week it went one further. When it did this, it didn't unfreeze, much like other incidents. But when I went into task manager from right clicking the task bar it hardlocked my computer. Had to restart. Wait for raid to rebuild.
Yesterday it did the same thing, firefox not responding. HDD thrashing. This time I decided to use Ctrl Alt Del to open task manager. Got to the blue windows 7 home premium overlay screen and it hardlocked. I was listening to an mp3 at the time. The MP3 kept playing. I thought maybe a device did it so I unplugged all my USB stuff in back. No effect. Replugged them, none of their lights came on. Restarted, waited for raid to rebuild.
Same damn thing happened today. This time I was ready, I already had task manager up! Aha! Firefox not responding. Rest of the computer including task manager was responsive... until I pressed End Task on firefox. Then it hardlocked, but my mouse didn't. My mouse was the only thing responsive. Then I clicked the taskbar down at the bottom and it too locked. Restarted, waiting for raid rebuild.
Any clue where to start on this? It's been happening more and more and now it's getting worse. Far worse. Is it firefox? The antivirus I recently switched to? (Norton security suite) My ram? Processor? HDD? It's only ever happening with firefox, or it's the only catalyst.
