Wrong Application is set as default program for .xlsx

For some reason, i never moved-on from MS office 2003. When i reinstalled windows then installed said office suite, i could no longer find the update that enables me to open .xslx files. So then i installed an old copy of Excel 2007. Since i used 2003 as default for .xlsx files, when i uninstalled 2003, i could not set 2007 as default cause whenever i do change it and select Excel 2007 in the Default Programs program, it somehow switches to Windows Media Center... ???:sarc: Weird! How do i fix this? Thanks in advance!

I had a similar issue with Office 2010 and Office 2019/365

Control Panel > uninstall a program > click on program > choose repair.
It resets the defaults & therefore your .xlsx should work as intended. The operative word is SHOULD!

Microsoft Office programs, for whatever their reasoning, the newer version takes over as the default. I remember reading an IT article on the subject-matter, I see if I can find the link and post it!

It didn’t work. It even restarted my computer after repairing but still the same problem. Ill try reinstalling when i find my installer. Meantime, aren’t there any solutions by way of regedit (which i know nothing about, just happened upon while googling but didn’t find a tailor-fit fix).

Microsoft Office 2007
%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Office\Office12
Microsoft Office 2003
%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Office\Office11

As you removed 2003, any entries showing as Office 11 need to be deleted

Suggestion. Use Revo to uninstall a program. Control Panel > Uninstall a Program leaves too many remnants via the standard uninstallers. From experience!
