My suggestion is to set Services - Windows Update - Manual and on WU page set it to Never check.
Then run UpdatePack7R2 to download an up to date Simplix file.
Simplix is a single file (880MB) that contain all updates since Win 7 released up to date. It has all security and non security updates without the trash (telemetry and tracking). Very good.
Then run WU manually to find updates for Office etc and decide witch one to install.

To uninstall the telemetry, run cmd file to uninstall those KB files.
kb_spy.cmd.txt
Rename it as KB_Spy.cmd and run it.

It does. But if you have used WU you probably have some telemetry packs.

If you want the dotNet updates to go with the simplix pack then place the "dotNetFx48_20210117_x64.WA" (or x86) in the same folder as "updatepackxxxxx.exe" and Simplix will use it to install the dotNet updates.

Simplix by itself doesn't install dotNet updates.

To uninstall the telemetry, run cmd file to uninstall those KB files.
kb_spy.cmd.txt
Rename it as KB_Spy.cmd and run it.

Can someone tell me how often this "kb_spy.cmd.txt" gets updated? I'm assuming that it needs to be updated on a regular basis and where would one get the updated version from? Will the link above always contain the most up to date file?

- - - Updated - - -

If you want the dotNet updates to go with the simplix pack then place the "dotNetFx48_20210117_x64.WA" (or x86) in the same folder as "updatepackxxxxx.exe" and Simplix will use it to install the dotNet updates.

Simplix by itself doesn't install dotNet updates.

I just found this thread and was glad to discover that it is possible to install Windows 7 updates and avoid the (so-called) telemetry by using the Simplix pack. I have downloaded that pack from Major Geeks but have yet to apply it to my system which has never been updated apart from a handful of absolutely essential updates for which I downloaded the offline install files and applied them manually to the system (I just do not allow my system to connect to Microsoft Update at all); but it really is problematic keeping track of that. If Simplix does as it says then it looks like the better option for me.

However, while researching doing that, I downloaded and installed to the system .NET 4.8 using the offline installer. I then went to GitHub and downloaded the latest update for that .NET 4.8 but I have a couple of problems/issues with it, as follows and I'm hoping you can supply solutions:

(1) Does the update I just downloaded from GitHub have all updates to .NET 4.8 included in the file downloaded? Kind of, is this a 'cumulative' update?

(2) The file I downloaded from GitHub has the title "dotNetFx48_20210511_x64.WA" In effect, it isn't an ".exe" file. I couldn't see any way to install it to the system but I did find out it was an 'archive' file. So I unpacked it but still don't see any way to install it to the system. The unpacked archive does have a folder titled "Installer" in it and that contains a file titled "1ed3e.msi" -- is that the installer? Do I just launch that and it will do the install? I do see that you say that I can just leave the ".WA" in the same path as the Simplix exe file and that Simplix will find it and apply the update. However, I'd like to do the install of the .NET update manually if I that can be done.

(3) If I had wanted Simplix to do the install of the .NET update would it have been necessary to unpack that update manually before running Simplix? Or would Simplix be able to use the *.WA file directly itself?

(4) Can you give me an idea of how often the Simplix pack gets updated?

Hope someone can assist with with my questions.

There is no need to update the "kb_spy,cmd" file.
No need to unpack the "dotNetFx48_20210511_x64.WA" file however it is really slow to install.
If you wish you can skip the "dotNetFx48_xxxxx" and after running "Simplix and the kb_spy" file, simply install
"BypassESU-v11" and run WU to update the "dotNet" files. "BypassESU-v11" is added into the Simplix pack to allow it to install all the ESU updates up to current which is May 2021.
Use the Gitlab download link and note the password "2020".

Thanks very much for the response Bill.

I worked my way through this, though it's a lot of new information to take in in one go, and got Windows updates done via the Simplix pack.

For the .NET 4.8 update I got the offline installer directly from Microsoft and used that along with the Bypass application. I do though have a couple of questions about that.

(1) You say the Bypass application is included in the Simplix pack. So, presumably, Simplix installs that as part of it's routine. However, I note that there was a compatibility warning on Bypass v 11 at MDL and the advice was to install it, do the update of .NET, then uninstall Bypass after the .NET update was completed. So my question is, does the Simplix pack uninstall the Bypass once the Simplix pack has completed its own update Windows routine?

(2) If I go to the GitHub site and check for .NET updates posted there, then there are a quite few updates listed there. Am I correct in thinking that the most recent .NET 4.8 update offered there is a cumulative update to .NET 4.8? In effect, I don't have to download and install all of the updates offered at the GitHub site?

Simplix doesn't install the Bypass, it only uses it to allow Simplix to install the ESU updates up to the current date of the pack.
You need to install it after using Simplix to get future updates through "Windows update". WU will only give you the dotNet and Monthly Roll-up updates. It wont show you Security Only updates, though they can be downloaded and installed separately.
If you read again it is only recommended to uninstall the dotNet Bypass and not the whole Bypass-v11. I personally leave it installed and have no trouble, as do many others. Only some folks have a need to install/uninstall the dotNet Bypass.
Forget about GitHub as once your back to using Windows Updates, you will get all you need.

In case you missed it, here is the Bypass tutorial:

Thanks again for the response Bill.

I have no intention of allowing my computer to connect to Microsoft Updates to automatically get updates for anything -- I'll just use the Simplix packs for that as that seems to be possible.

So, again, can I repeat the question: If I go to the GitHub site and check for .NET updates posted there, then there are a quite few updates listed there. Am I correct in thinking that the most recent .NET 4.8 update offered there is a cumulative update to .NET 4.8? In effect, I don't have to download and install all of the updates offered at the GitHub site?

I have to say I'm finding all of this quite complicated so I'll just have to find a way that works for me and what I'm happy doing and not happy doing.
