BSOD at Startup

Windows Live SkyDrive

There is a link to a few DMP files. I didn't have this issue until I tried to setup my HDTV on the HDMI.

It set up fine, but upon reboot, I had distorted graphics, right from post, and Windows 7 only got as far the loading Windows screen logo. BSOD with atikmdag.sys error.

I tried all the uninstall/reinstall of the drivers and no fix.

I also am having issues with the ATI HDMI audio option when I'd like to set my TV to play sound. I had some overclocking, but I've reset my BIOS to defaults, and have the latest BIOS for my motherboard.

My system (custom)
AMD x4 620
ASUS M4785TD-M EVO
Patriot DDR3 Sector 5 (2x2gb) (Auto detects at 1066mhz)

No bsods until I connected HDMI. Now I get it whether the HDMI is connected or not.

Thanks for all your help!:D

Hi riggs and welcome

Not placating. Attaching the dmp files means that more ppl can get at them now and in the future if nec. Plus it is the preferred method

All three dmps point to the same 2 files. First atikmdag.sys which is a component of the video driver and the direct X component.

I would
Upgrade the video driver and dirctX.

Run a system file check to verify and repair system files
to run: type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>SFC /SCANNOW

Hope this helps

The dump files point to atikmdag.sys.

I noticed you have not listed your Grpahics Card. Please do so so we can locate the correct driver for your card.

It's clearly an ATI driver issue.

Edit... DAMNIT KEN.. Somethings never change huh =[

Thanks guys.

I realize it is my ATI HD4200 onboard graphics and the driver. I have gone from the ASUS supplied version, from 7/09 to the most recent, and it didn't help. I have found plenty of information on the web about this error.

I have reverted to the older drivers, but it doesn't fix anything now that I've introduced this BSoD it seems that it can't rid itself of it.

How would I go about updating DirectX? I ran DxDiag and it indicated version 11 (corrected).

Thanks.

0x116 errors are never related to driver version for the video card. Other drivers being older may have an effect. It's still good however, to be running latest video driver anyhow.

I'd update everything else possible (motherboard/chipset especially) and make sure it's not a heat issue. Use ATI Tray Tools to underclock as a test or run with a room fan blowing into the open case, to test.

My MoBo and CPU temp at idle are approximately 37C based on the ProbeII tool included from ASUS.

This error occurs from a cold boot (turn it off for the night) in the morning. I doubt it is heat related, as screen hasn't even woken up yet and I am receiving this error. I believe I have all the latest drivers installed for my motherboard/chipset, but I will look a little more into that.

Would the ATI HDMI audio drivers screw this up somehow? When I have my display extended using HDMI, I am not able to select HDMI audio sound to be played from the TV. In the Sound Options it is listed as "Cable Unplugged" which is obviously not true. I will try to wipe ALL my drivers out that are included with my MoBo and reinstall fresh from the disk. Hopefully that can rid me of the BSOD.

Any other suggestions?

How would I go about updating these drivers?

According to everything I have read about this problem, it is caused by some recent Windows updates. Read down to the bottom of the page below. It says to remove Windows updates: KB974332, KB974431 and KB976098. I have read about this same fix in many posts.

atikmdag.sys, Windows 7 x64, ATI Radeon 4850, Crossfire

Confirmation in this post and more possible fixes in this post.
Display Driver atikmdag and nvlddmkm Stopped Responding

I'll check those updates, which it possibly could have been. I've read all those pages, but none of the fixes helped. Thanks for the information though. I hadn't seen the one on Windows Social Forums site.

Now that would be wonderful because this 0x116 error - I've been trying to get to the bottom of it for users for a long time now.

Well - can't hurt to see how it goes after this is updated or removed. Cool.

Google them to discover what they are and if you can get updates somehow.

Ok, So the rpddispm.sys is related to Live Mesh Beta. It is the Mirror Display Driver that allows you to remotely access your desktop ( I think from my research).

I don't think there are any updates to it, but I don't need this software. I will uninstall it. Does anyone recommend a software that does a good job of uninstalling ALL software bits and pieces from everywhere, including all unnecessary files, etc.

Of course it would be Microsoft who has a driver for one program (albeit Beta) that screws up another....

I'll try this tonight. Also, the other driver is for my Wireless Keyboard/Mouse from Logitech. I will try to update this, but I believe I have the most recent stuff.

What is the best software to check drivers, etc?

Thanks.

From this thread, which discusses how Live Mesh interacts with Windows 7 (althought in Beta) I think I'll uninstall for now and just stick with Live Sync. I like to share my pictures with people and it saves me the time from having to upload them to Picasa, Gallery, etc....

Fingers crossed. I will uninstall Mesh, and do a clean install of my drivers.

I will update this tonight.
