Cool,thanx man,but i see yours is the 5700 series,is that the idle temperature?Whats the highest yours ever gone and are you happy with it,how does it handle games, i wanna play in HD,and have every thing on highest they can be...can the card handle it?Oh and i have 11 fans in my case one who is 25cm,on my gtx 285 the highest temp i got was 76c,so i dont want it hotter than that.But mainly i want to play EVERY THING on the best and highest possible.

just depends on you're set up my card works beautifull but im going to upgrade a new gpu soon so ill have to retest temps the highest my gpu has ever gone was 81c due to a vigorous stress test but other then that the max i seen besides the stress test was 55-65c which is not bad for playing games most of the day when im off work

Just for perspective, anything over about 85C (for a gaming card) is getting a little high.

Also, my 260GTX idles at around 40C, load (stress test) at around 71.

I've seen and read about the new cards getting up in the 90's, especially the FEMI's

I can tell you that my 4890 idles around 61ish, down from 67ish -http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/93202-lowered-gpu-temps-6-degrees.html. Those high idle temps aren't unusal for that card.

Thanx all,sygnus21 i checked the link you added on your last post and saw the temps were low for that card and the performance seems to be real good,better then my current gtx 285.And the power usage is allso great.But i still wonder about the cuda and physx of nvidia,but the 5870 seems to have higher mhz ect than even the 480,the 480 only wins in memory.Its bad that the 5870 only has 1gig memory...

I don't think that 1 gig of memory will be an issue. There have been no compliants in that area.

Good point. The FERMI series runs hot, I know. I don't know about the ATI cards though.

Like I said, If I were you, I'd wait till ~ mid November for Cayman (the cards that are supposed to replace HD 5850 and HD 5870).

According to AMD, these cards will be the real deal (HD 6950 and HD 6970).

1- Availability.... Will you be able to get one of the new cards. There has been issues in the past with availability... which leads to the second consideration....

2- Pricing.... Considering the price of the 5870, are you willing to pay the asking price these new cards.... especially if they're in short supply?

Personally I'd wait till after the new year, than see how things pan out. But.... if you can't wait, and need a new card now, you could go with the 5870, or get something cheaper to tide you over till you decide on the newer 6000 series.

Availability MIGHT be an issue with these cards (I don't think it will but, who knows), but price definitely won't.

If the HD 6970 debuts at a much higher price than that of the HD 5870 (very much likely), there's still the HD 6950 to look after. Which everyone believes will sport similar to superior performance baseline vs HD 5870 @ a similar price.

Either way, It's a win-win situation for the OP.

technicly it should be 1.4 gigs of ddr5

1.5...Good points all the above,but when taking in concideration of what you said i think i might just tkae the 5870 and next year i will look at the 6000 series,but for now i need a card this week,so its gotta be the 5870,but if i am gonna replace it anyway i can get the 5850 black edition for about 600 rands cheaper.If i slap another 300 rand with the saved 600 i can get a nother 6 gig a second black hardrive 1TB.....

Check this link XFX HD 5850 Review » Page 14 - Testing: 3DMark 06 - Overclockers Club and just click on the site at the bottem on nr 14-3d mark06,there you will see the difference in performance between the 5870 and 5850 black edition is not more than 300 in the scores,and on 3d mark vantage the 5850 black edition beats the 5870....even if its just by a few.My point is the 5870 is better at some scores,but i save allot on the 5850 black edition,it is on promotion....you see my dilemma?

I see your dilima I also mentioned if you oc'ed a 5850 or a 6870 you might match the 5870 all together

It's just a matter of adjusting the clock the big difference between the two is the stream processors

It requires more power because it's ~40% faster/more powerful vs your HD 5770.

FWIW my 4890 has those same requirements :shock:



These cards are getting more and more powerful thus they require more and more juice.

Sometime down the road you'll want a power supply with multi PCI-E connectors for the card as I've seen some recommendations against using adapters. On the flip side, some cards come with the adapters, mine did.



Check to site to see if your card does as well. Most places will list what's in the box.

And to be honest a lot of mid to high end cards will require this multi PCI-E power connection anyway so it helps to have a power supply that already has them.

BTW the card that I have is an XFX 4890 and as you can see, it shipped with two adapters.

Thanks for the info originally i was going to buy a new psu anyway i already had my eye on a 750w with 4 pci e connectors and a couple 4 pins if im not mistaken i could use a 4pin and 2 to make a 6 right ?

anyway i am running a cool max 600w supply which i got only cause i needed 1x6 pin i wasn't thinking crossfire or anything kinda thought one gpu is good enough vs two if you get a good one

so on to my point when i did a search just to see if it was possible to just adapt the 6 pin i thought g quick fix but honestly by next year sometime i will have built a whole new rig and this current one i am on going to the upstairs 42 inch vizio for the same thing im doing in me and my wife's room 2 monitor link and hd movie surrond sound entertainment for her and the little one
games for me

I pretty much have a few plans in the works and would like to share sooner or later
