Can't move "note pad" files to desk topo folder.

Are you seeing this box ( or something very similar)?

Are you pressing the save button which is highlighted in red?

If several people weigh in here it only confuses the issue. Let's get him up and running with one method first before giving others?

Or I will step back here and you continue?

Regards....Mike Connor

You can go ahead. I have the step by step complete if he still needs help. No worries :)

If you have a step by step ready, then by all means go ahead, I will refrain from any further comments.

Can you open the same file in wordpad and do the same things? But saving it to the directory you wish?

Are the following statements correct?

You can move text files that you created or edited with Wordpad to any other location?

You can not move text files that you created or edited with Notepad to any other location?

Those statements are correct. At this time.

Sometimes I can create a note pad file and save it to the documents library.

I can click and drag those files from folder to folder within the documents library.

But I cannot move a notepad file from the documents library to any folder on the desk top. Not by click&drag nor by cnrl+C, etc.

I'm lost as to whether the OP is having problems moving or saving. I see moving in the post, but the description of what he's doing is saving.

When you click that save button, is there a filename filled in? What file type is shown below the filename? What folder is chosen on the left side of the screen? Can you give us a screenshot of that same scenario from your system?

OK. Go to "programs" --> "Accessories" --> Notepad, and <Right-Click> on it with your mouse

Choose "Properties"

And in the popup box choose "Security"

Do you have the same permissions as shown in that box?

Do the same thing for Wordpad, the permissions in the Wordpad security box must be the same as those in the Notepad box. If they are not, you do not have the correct permisssions in Notepad, and that is preventing you from doing various things.

That has nothing to do with moving files however, text files with the file extension .txt are identical regardless of which program created them, and if you can not move text files created or edited with Notepad then you have a system defect or a virus.

Get back to me with the results of the above...........

Folders? There is only one desktop. Are you trying to save the file on the desktop or to a folder on the desktop?

My note pad is just like yours.

But my wordpad iis different. Under group or user names mine has a different icon highlighted. This one is labeled "Everyone".

And under permissions only "Read&Execute" and "Read" are checked "Allow". There are no checks under the "Deny" column.

Are we on to something?

Possibly. In the context menu for Notepad ( <Right-Click>menu ) you just looked at, click on
"Run as Administrator", and then try to edit and save a file with notepad. What are the results?

The permissions on a program don't determine where it can save files. Only the permissions on the folder itself do that. If you can save, say an Excel or Word or Wordpad file on your desktop, then you can save a Notepad file there too.

Didn't work, Mike. Here is what I did. I created a file in notepad.
I hit "save as".
scrolled down and double clicked the folder into which I wanted to save the file.
named the file xyz*.txt and hit "Save".

Nothing happened.

Tried again and tried to save it into the default location. Still nothing happened.
