Solved W7 Updates May 2011

I have today downloaded four updates. Two are no problem but two will not install: these are KB2529073 and KB2534366.

OK, so the installation hangs and after cutting power and reverting to an earlier OS all is well. But when I shut down, the system startrs to install the two bad updates (as above) before shutting down. Then when I switch on again, the installation continues but then hangs and I need to go through the cutting power and restore procedure over again.

How can I stop the installation of downloaded updates on shutdown? And are there known issues with these updates (I have seen a number of comments/warnings on the net about these...)?

Thanks

Alangr

You can turn off automatic updates or configure windows to download updates but let the user choose when to install them. Heres a walkthrough.

How to Configure Windows Update Settings | Windows 7 Tutorials

Updates may be buggy but they are not buggy for everyone. Try installing the problematic updates one by one.

FYI: I did the update today for win7 and it messed up my outlook 2010, the only fix was to go to control panel
select outlook 2010 and do a repair. All is well now.
I don't understand but this has happened twice but the repair does solve it.
I run office 2003 but installed outlook 2010 separately which normally works fine..

I have dos 6.22, wfwg 3.11, win98, 2000 and xp VHD's available for testing. MS's Virtual PC works great.
I had three updates that failed.I down loaded each one individually and tried to install them one at a time and each one said it didn't apply to my computer. They were KB2529073, KB2534366 and KB2533552. The last one applies if you haven't installed SP 1 yet. I'm using Windows 7 Pro, SP1 64 bit. These were 32 bit versions, is there a 64 bit version of these KB'?

Four Only Four Updates This Update Was A Pain

It seems to be working fine however.

1. I did the update around 24:00 GMT yesterday. While the download went okay the install was a bit slow.

2. Also the four updates are broken down into two separate sequential updates. First three and a reboot. Then a fourth one and no reboot required on both x32 and x64.

Not that this is any different compared to any other update with regard to using proper procedure.
Lets not forget about the old sequential update thingy.

One should always use the Windows Update to check for more updates immediately after you apply Windows updates of any kind.

Yeah I had no problem with them through Windows Updates.

That's exactly how mine went. And yeah, you should always immediately check for more updates. I would also add that any important updates be installed as not doing so can cause problems down the road, including update issues as some will be pre-requisite for others.

With that said I would definitely not recommend hiding any important updates for reasons stated above.

My two cents

If manual install says "Does not apply to your system" but the Updater still wants to install and they won't- then hide them.

They just aren't needed!

I downloaded these three from Microsoft KB2529073, KB2534366 and KB2533552 and tried to install them. When installing it comes back and says that it doesn't apply to this computer. It does it for all three. So some say don't hide them so what do I do just leave them there for ever to keep popping up as an update that will not install because they don't apply. SP1 has been installed in this computer.

If Windows 7 recommends it then I say install it. You may not be using MSFT USB drivers today but what if you start using them tomorrow? Are you going to remember to go back and do that install. Highly unlikely?

Disk space today is so cheap if its critical or important I install it. If it is optional then I read the details and research it before deciding whether to install it or not.

I would anyway install this MS hotfix for the reason i have SP1 installed and do not want to require a third party Fix-it solution known as "7601usbfix.exe" from another well known forums...

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...90-update-disables-usb-ports.html#post1350318

At least MS did make the effort to provide this Fix!!

Just install it and re-plug your usb devices and it will install the right peripheral with the right Ms driver!

The above is at this link on our forum.

The person posting was being prompted to download and install this update two days ago.
They are using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

All I can say is Windows Update shows you what is available to download and install.

When you try manual install and it tells you "Not Needed" it is not going to install it no matter what you do.

The problem is it removes the factory driver, installs the MS one and then the Update is installed.
One set of my factory USB drivers were gone after the "update" in Device Manager replaced by MS generics.
So I had to reinstall the factory ones because there was no option to roll back.

Which is another reason I recommend not hiding "Important" updates.

When you try manual install and it tells you "Not Needed" it is not going to install it no matter what you do.

To be clear here, most updates that come through Windows Updates are intended to be installed that way. In short, if it shows up in "Windows Update" it is most likely needed.

What happens is sometimes people try to manually install updates that aren't needed, and thus are NOT in Windows Update - those files will get flagged as "Not Needed"

Another thing is some files require other files to be installe (Pre-requisite), If they are missing, the file needing the pre-requisite file "may" be flagged as Not needed"

This is why I say it's important not to hide "Important" files/updates.

How does Windows determine which updates my computer needs?

Windows Update contains software tools that detect information about your computer, such as the make and model and the version of Windows and other Microsoft software that your computer is running. Microsoft uses that information to install only the updates your computer needs. For more information, read the Turn automatic updating on or off and Change how Windows installs or notifies you about updates.

Important updates. Important updates help keep your computer more secure and reliable, protecting your computer and your privacy. These updates include security and critical updates, as well as reliability improvements.

Recommended updates. Recommended updates help keep your software up to date and your computer running at its best. If you selected Use recommended settings when you set up Windows Update, then recommended updates will be shown together with important updates. If you selected Install important updates only, recommended updates will be shown together with optional updates. Recommended updates include software updates and new or improved features.

Optional updates. Optional updates include updates and software that you can install manually, such as new or trial Microsoft software or optional device drivers from Microsoft partners.
Understanding Windows automatic updating

Again, my two cents.

Some say if it shows on update you need it, well will you tell me how to install it if it's not needed and won't install. I've read before of windows telling people they needed an update when they didn't.
