Solved Windows Installer: anyway around it?

I've been going round and round trying to install "Cliplets-for-64bit-windows.msi"
I've been logged as Admin, ran different "Fix-its" found on MS support. Always ends in failure. I've started the service over and over, just won't complete.

1st box: Error writing to file: C\Program Files\Microsoft Research\Cliplets\Cliplets.exe config. Verify you have access to that directory.

2nd box: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support for assistance.

Is the real problem the first box and not the Windows Installer Service? If so why wouldn't the Admin be able to write to anywhere?

When I search problem sometimes I get thousands of results that I don't seem to be able to sort by date. I follow different solutions only to find it doesn't apply to Win7Pro, or makes no difference.

Seems like it should be easier.

I'd like to create a log of my attempts but my mind is blank on just how to do that (if I ever knew, that is).

I take it you've already tried right clicking on the msi and running as admin?

When I right click while on my normal user account on the .mse "Run as admin" is not an option. I will switch to an acct
with Admin rights and get back to you.
thanks

Switched to Admin and it wasn't an option there, either. There was an option to "Take Ownership" ( I think), don't recall just where that comes from.

Belay that last post. I forgot msi files don't have the run as admin in the context menu. Open up an elevated command prompt, then copy the file location of the msi installer (c:\whatever\wherever\file.msi) and paste it into the command window, then press enter. Don't forget that spaces are a no-no, so if you have spaces in the directory name or file name, put quotes around the entire thing ("c:\whatever\where ever\file name.msi").

Just to clarify, am I copying the .msi file to where ever the Windows Installer (.exe)(?) is?

No, you are just copying the location. Open up explorer, go to the directory where the file is, and copy the text to the clipboard. Paste the text into the command window.

Try this it's free and easy to use and may fix your problem, can't hurt. From the cmd promt/admin. sfc /scannow 3 times boot after each. It's Windows 7 way of checking it's own System Files and repairing if possible.

Yep, I figured that's what you were telling me. Anyways I ran it and after I was told that my "Work" user acct had started the install and let me undo it the process ended with the same "box 2" message as my original post.

Good try though, thanks for that method.

Hello, new day, success...............

I did the SFC /SCANNOW elevated cmd 3 times with no problems being detected.

I tried again to install Cliplets using elevated cmd ending with same failure.

I ran M/S FixIt 50809.msi, which reported successful fix. Not really sure what that fixed, but I think it just restarted Windows Installer (or)?

Next, troubled by repeated message re: where I was installing Cliplets (Program Files/Microsoft/etc) I created a Cliplets directory under Program Files (x86)/Microsoft/ and it successfully loaded and ran.

Once again I thank you all for the support, you're a great group.
