Solved windows 7 wont remember wireless password

have a wireless USB dongle that I use on this dell inspiron 531. win7 wont remember the password. have to enter it every time when I boot to get internet to work.

any ideas how to fix?

the brand and model of the dongle might help. Some come with connect softs and others don't. A profile in the software may need you to input the passphrase one time and save profile. If Windows is handling your wifi connections, when u click on the signal icon in the tray, and right click on the connection u use, select properties of connection, two tabs at top, Connection, checkbox for connect automatically. If this is checked and still will not auto connect, check that the passphrase is correctly entered in the connection properties.

this is what I bought. Ive entered the code several times in 2 places, still not keeping it.

entered it a few times in many places. its not saving. beats me what to do. I tried the profile in the software for the dongle... it's not saving the pass there either. even if I just log out the setting is lost. zapping the profile and the network connection and starting over did not help.

Does it identify as Home network when it is on?

not part of the home group but is now after I tweaked a few settings and added it. even this setting is lost when I log out?

I have a laptop and windows 7 remembers the wireless password on that. so why does windows 7 remember it on one pc but not the other? strange.

Does your username remember other things? For example change the position of icons on desktop, or change some settings in WORD. Does it remember those after logoff/logon?

icons stay the same every time I boot or if I move them they stay put. just changed a setting in word options, and it saved the setting on logoff.

View the properties. Is password listed there correct?

Delete your wireless name from the list. Now disconnect/connect wireless. Is it in the list again? Is password also listed?

the password in properties is not the same as the one for my wireless.. I change it, log out, and it's set back to some password I guess windows is picking? which is not the password for the wireless

Is it a total random password you see? Or is it a password of something else?
If you change it in dialogue and save it, close dialog and look again.... does it show the correct password?

I guess its random, but it's not the correct wireless password. its says network security key but its not the password for my wireless. Im unable to change and save it wont let me.

under it is something called key index with numbers 1,2,3,4... not sure what that is either. 1 is selected.

1. Please open search, type services.msc and scroll down to WLAN AutoConfig, stop it.
2. Locate to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\. Delete everything in this folder except profiles folder. Then, delete all in profiles folder except interfaces.
3. Delete everything in the interfaces folder.
4. Now reboot your system to test the issue again.

Are files being created in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\profiles\interfaces folder now?
