Hi, I have seen searching for a long time to resolve my issue regarding windows update. Recently i formatted my hard drive. Upon installation of some software my windows update stopped working. Getting an error message "Service Not Running". I tried to fix using microsoft's "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic" software. It detected some errors and said resolved after fixing(except missing files).
I am unable to upload the log report as per posting instructions. Says "access denied" when i try to copy CBS folder.

Help will be appreciated.

OK, this isn't a fix, but it's the next steps I would take because I see no one's replied to your post or mine yet. Maybe one noob can help another.

Click Start, right-click Computer, click Manage, Services and Applications, then click Services.
Scroll down to find Windows Update and double-click it.

I presume the "Service Status" is "stopped"? What's the Startup Type set at? I think it should be Automatic (Delayed Start).
If you click the Start button for the service, what happens?
That might (hopefully!) shed a little more light on your problem.

OK, so the Windows Update service is running. When you try to run Windows Update, does it specify which service isn't running, and does it give you any kind of error code?

Also, just for curiosity, what antivirus are you using, and have you tried shutting off the antivirus program and running Windows Update? I only ask this because you said Windows Update was working after the O/S reinstall, then quit after installing some programs. . . . . . . possibly an A/V? Firewall program? (Trying to figure out what software stopped windows update from working)

No specific error codes. Just getting error message as "Service not running".
Yah installing something made the situations like this. Using K7 anti virus. Not its not the one that creates problem, tried disabling/uninstalling it.

Attaching image of the error

I see that your Windows Defender is not running either. Hmm, do you have an Intel chipset in this computer? (Not CPU - chipset)
There have been issues with drivers for Intel's chipset causing problems just like what you are describing.
What's the make/model of your computer?

Please do so.

NoelDP has much more experience and knowledge than I, pmr1990. Work with him and good things happen. I've heard/read great reviews about him. One thing you missed was the SURT program. With all due respect, "unable to find the software" does not equate to "Done everything as per the instructions". According to your FSS log, you're running Windows 7 Home Premium, 32 bit, so the software is here:

Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) [May 2013] from Official Microsoft Download Center

It's on the page that the posting instructions link to.

And the CBS log: When you try to copy (not move) the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to the desktop as in the instructions, you should not be getting an "Access Denied" error. Even if I try to delete/move it, Windows still allows me to. Are you using a "limited user" account or an administrator account?

Yeah i missed the SURT program. The microsoft website didnt give me a link to download SURT at first. Thanks for the link. I did try SURT program. It gives me an error message. Screenshot attached in previous post.
And yes, i am using the administrator account. Trust me, i am getting an access denied error while i try to copy the CBS folder.
