Mods: Please read this thread before merging it with a different thread that has nothing to do with this issue. This is not the same issue I was having with being unable to access the WinXP "My Documents" folder in Win7.

--

I discussed previously that I was unable to access my XP installation's "My Documents" folder in Windows 7. I never did find a solution to that problem, so I booted into XP and moved everything in "My Documents" to c:\mydocs.

I can access c:\mydocs in Windows 7, however only about 3GB of the 25GB of pictures in the "My Pictures" folder are showing. I've gone through the permissions to make sure my account has full authority over the folder, I've taken owership of the folder, and made sure that the ownership of the file is set to Administrators. Still, only those 3GB of pictures are showing.

If I boot back into XP, all 25GB of pictures are there.

2 more things:

  • In setting some of the security/permissions/ownership settings in both XP and Windows 7, some files report a generic "access denied" error, telling me to make sure the files aren't in use (they're not).

  • The properties of "My Pictures" indicates that some files are hidden. If I uncheck the hidden box and apply, it seems to apply to the folder and the files in it. But if I re-open the properties, the "hidden" box is again checked.

Does anyone have any ideas?

It's best to put the things you need to share into the actual sharing folders rather than trying to get them from the original folders. it works for me everytime. :)

I should still be able to access them without any problems, sharing folder or not. Someone suggested I add it to the library, which I did, but it's still only showing 3GB of the 25GB of pictures.

Hmm....those files that appear hidden, does it happen in XP or in Win7 only? or in both?

Both, but Windows 7 is set to display all hidden and system files.

Can you see all the pictures if you move a copy of them over too the sharing folders?

There may be some type of GB limit on what you can access outside of the sharing folders but I've never heard of it before.

Nope. There's no way there's any sort of a size limit.

Ok another question to help us help you...

Are there any actual files missing, have you verified that, or is it just the size of the folders reported incorrectly?

If they're actually missing, are they all located in a specific folder (those missing) or they're missing randomly?

There is a setting somewhere in Windows XP (Unfortunately I can't give you exact steps for not having an XP with me at the moment) That makes your folders public to all, this setting is used in Windows XP itself so limited accounts won't be able to access the admin's account's data, so maybe you can try unchecking that? I'm sure that the setting is available somewhere in the account options by the way.

Hope you get this solved
