IE9 - does not open file when I say "Open"

I reset all the IE settings to default and I seem to be getting this problem after I reverted back to IE 9 since IE 10 and 11 did not fully work. The updates installed successfully but when I opened the browser, it immediately exited without any error. no errors in eventlog or anything.

so I reverted back to IE9 and all works except this...

when I download a file, I get prompted to either save or open. if I hit open, the file does NOT open - even a simple word document. I have to save it, go to that location and open it manually.

any ideas why and how I can "fix" this?

Use No Add-ons mode/ Click the Start button and type in the search box,

Click on the suggestion (No Add-ons) or it’s located at,

Using ie9 you can use the 64 bit version if your machine is 64 bit,

hi.

so I tried IE without add ons and still the same problem.
I also run 64bit version of IE all the time. Running 32 bit version still gives me the same problem as does the 64bit version.

anymore ideas?

Post some screen shots of your Show all add-ons pages,

Also use Clean boot,

I have filled out the system specs.
I have symantec small business edition installed as AV however remember that even disabling it still has no effect to the problem and it was always working before I installed IE11 for years...

There's one Unavailable add-on that is Enabled = Disable it,
Go to Uninstall a program and take more screen shots please,
Some of these add-ons look odd to me anyway ?

im a developer so tons of software installed. I can assure you no unnecessary software is installed.

this started when i installed ie10, failed to launch then i just uninstalled it and reverted back to ie9 which had the issue

If you have IE9 installed, you can forget about EPM. It is in IE10 and IE11.

You mentioned in the OP that you reset IE.

Unfortunately, there are several reset levels :-(

I spent an hour or two staring at Process Monitor (PM) while IE9 64bit held a document in limbo (waiting for me to press Open). I would start PM, press Open and then stop PM. Nothing jumped out at me for you to check :-(

You could uninstall your antivirus app.
Revert to IE8...
...then try moving up to IE9 to see if that cures your ills.

If that fails, it really depends on how much effort you want to put into this issue. You could install VirtualBox, create a W7 Virtual Machine and compare things until you found the difference. Or try a repair install or a complete install of the OS.

thanks. I need to avoid doing a complete reinstall of the OS as I DO NOT have the time and it is a core system. it takes me more than 2.5 weeks to get everything installed and configured (that is with around 9 hours sleep). This is due to the configuration and software installations and the large amount of data I have.

I tried exporting the IE reg keys from a working VM with the same OS And IE version and importing it but no go there either.

no idea what the hell happened when I uninstalled IE10/11 for it to do this. the reason I uninstalled it was because as soon as you launch it, it closes again immediately. no errors, no nothing.

If SFC does not find issues, then I don't know of a way to repair IE.

...but I doubt that either will cure this issue.

The reg export/import that you did - was it in the HKLM area? Since a new user profile failed too, the issue has to be machine wide.

I've seen a few threads like yours before. The OPs gave up and re-installed. I totally understand why you don't want to do that. A repair install should not impact your programs and data, but OS tweaks may go away.

yes, SFC /Verifyonly states that everything was intact.

the reg export/import was the HKCU not HKLM.... can you guide me on what I need to export in that areas instead?
