Oh, snap! Forgot about that! So far, the manual installs are Successful, except for one. I will continue on this path until done. Then I can snip whatever's left that won't install for your review.

But let me ask this: when faced with over 40 Updates that are generically described as "Update for Windows...." should I install them by their Issued Date? In that order, oldest first, or is that a waste of time?

What is the exact. Updates failure error? Most can be resolved by googling their verbatim text.

Are there Updates queued with a yellow ! mark on the Shutdown button when failure occurs? These are sometimes only cleared by Shutting Down and all others may fail until then.

Thanks, Greg. Almost finished. Yes, understand the Shut Down part. Almost finished (20 to go). Let me wrap it up and see what's left, error messages and all.

OK, attached are the updates that won't install. They all have the same error code: 800B0100. And yes, Greg, I double checked and the device settings are set to install drivers automatically. I have one more step to perform: Shut Down to finish installing updates. After this shutdown, I'll check for updates again and report back.
P.S. I did NOT install the graphics card update. Saving for later.

Were Updates queued on Shutdown button as described?

What Display driver is presently installed?

My last Shutdown experience yielded 4 more updates, installed successfully. But the Shutdown grabbed ALL in the queue, including the graphics card update that I was postponing --- which in turn prompted me to download and install their driver. I am still in the midst of that. After completed, I will check once more for any new updates. Please wait until I finish this to see exactly where we are, OK? Thanks.

You should try the Updates drivers first before importing any others like its XP. This can cause problems. Updates issues are one in a million. You pretty clearly had a clog that is often cleared by Shutdown if queued on Shutdown button.

If I may.
My method works quite well.
Installed Windows Updated 4 or 5 at a time and reboot whether Windows 7 requests it or not. Then go to the next 4 or 5. If I have a lot of Updates like a 100 + I will do 10 at a time.
I also use the Recommended Nvidia driver from Microsoft. It has been tested by Microsoft to work well with Windows 7. It might not be the newest Nvidia driver but new is not always better. When you got all the updates reboot and check for updates a couple more times. Sometimes their is a hanger back update that you will catch.

Back to watching Greg do his magic.

Bean,

The best thing is to let WU give you everything. Once you have everything, then you can start deciding what to download or not (I take everything - except Bing and Silverlight)

Greg is right on this. I felt the same way as you until I found it was just easier and more stable to get drivers from WU. My machine has AMD APU/chipset and Broadcom BT + Wifi. Those two always caused me fits trying to get the best drivers from HP or the OEM. One re-install I just let WU supply the drivers - sure they were back level, but I didn't have to worry about strange behavior.

I'm not saying that there isn't ever a reason to update the drivers, all I'm saying is that you need a reason better than it's out of date - an issue is apparent and the cause points to the driver.

Anyway, it sounds as though you're doing fine and almost at the finish line.

I'm out again

Bill

OK, I've finished as far as I can go. I have not installed any drivers since the virgin install of the OS. I did need to install a driver from the mobo install CD to enable internet --- and that is the ONLY DRIVER I have installed. I am trying to keep this crap as clean as possible so we can find out WHERE the problem is.

I was prompted by Windows Update to get a video driver which I did, so it could be updated. Too late to discuss that now. 'Tis done. So that makes 2 drivers installed so far (one for networking, and one for video).

Start, Shutdown ALWAYS shows updates need to complete. The same Updates will not install, although it keeps trying. I get the update to an older version of .NET might be causing a hiccup, so we can hide that one, yes? but the others?

Same 3 KB will fail in the Update queue, all with the same stupid error code 800B0100. The KB ending 8162 falsely reports a successful install only to reappear in the WU queue.

To recap: from the snip, KBs ending with 0631, 9943, 1813, and recurring 8162 won't install. Ignore?

Gotta stop and eat, but will check back later.

.

What does this mean? You should have already installed any drivers queued under Important and Optional Updates as I reminded you earlier today. It's only non-Updates drivers that we are asking you to hold off on until we see what's missing in Device Manager after all Updates are completed.

Check for Updates now and install everything including drivers. I thought you had already done this!

Sometimes Net Frameworks come in later so their Updates may be ahead of their parent. The few you showed us earlier are negligible for now. Were those the ones you are still concerned about?

Now start installing your Programs one at a time, while still checking for more Windows Updates since a Net Framework can be triggered for delivery by a program install. After each Program install use that program awhile, then test other performance including problems you had in the past to see if they return. Then move on to the next program.

You can also set up your desktop and browsers, surf online to see how that goes and give time between each Program install and further Updates.

No need to hide, just select one at a time
Then manually run WU again and select another one.
You might get one or two or all this way. There is often a co-dependency and I think that's what Greg was getting at - you might need a certain driver to allow another WU to install.

I'll take a look at the four you list. Oh - 8162 might be Silverlight - yeah, that keeps getting offered (5 on my machine are hidden)

If when you get this error, see if there is a try again button/link and hit that. These are simple things. I'll get back after looking at the KBs.

Greg and I cross posted. We're saying pretty much the same thing in different ways.

I'll be back after looking up the error codes and the KBs you say aren't installing.

Please complete the WU - drivers and all. I understand your caution, but please comply. If an issue does crop up, you can roll back the last driver if necessary.

That was pretty easy - try the Try again button if it is presented.
After all of the KBs that won't install still won't install, see:
Error 0x800B0100 when you try to install Windows Updates or Microsoft Updates

edit: on the link I posted, use the circled + signs to expand the following
(+) Resolution, then
(+) Windows 7
Run the MS Fixit for Windows 7
Run SFC /scannnow
Run SURT

as described in the link.

edit: KB2798162 was not Silverlight, I should have looked at it before I posted that. Try the above and see if it installs from WU afterwards.

If not - try installing the standalone for Win7 x64

Hey, guys, back after an internet outage took me down.....
First, regarding the updates, I have finished. And, yes, Layback Bear, that's what I did --- 3 at a time with a restart after each and they all installed --- except for 4, which I have hidden to stop the nagging to install them. To recap, they are (were):

Security Update for .NET Framework 3.5.1
I have 4.5.1 installed, so if I MUST have this, too, let me know. Hidden for now.

Security Update for Windows KB2479943
"This security update resolves one publicly disclosed vulnerability in DirectShow and one privately reported vulnerability in Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center." Have not installed either of these, so to me, this update is irrelevant and now hidden.

Security Update for Windows KB2631813
"The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted media file." Hidden for now, unless I am otherwise directed.

Security Update for Windows KB 2798162
"This update changes the text in several dialog boxes that are presented when you try to run executable files." Not losing any sleep over this one, unless I am told I need to. Hidden for now, but keeps returning as Bill also experiences.

The only driver that Windows Update put in my queue was for my NVidia graphics card. Allowed that update to install and it was successful.

Unless I am given specific direction with regard to the above 4 updates, I'm moving on.

Now, regarding drivers specifically. Sorry I confused you, Greg. Seems to be my life's purpose. "You should have already installed any drivers queued under Important and Optional Updates as I reminded you earlier today." Yes, I did install whatever was there. "Check for Updates now and install everything including drivers. I thought you had already done this!" Yes, I'm done.

Moving on to devices....
I had no USB nor serial bus controller drivers. However, an ASUS tech led me to the drivers I should have yesterday from their website, and the USB driver installed fine, but not the bus controller. He suggested that I complete all the Updates from windows and check again, to see if it got covered by an update. It did not. It is the ONLT yellow "!" in Device Manager. I will call them again tomorrow with my ongoing case and try the download again.

Attached is what is currently installed on this "clean" drive. What should I lay on next?
Microsoft Security Essentials?
Microsoft Office Suite?
My Canon printer?

I recommend taking all Security Updates.

I have also found out on my last repair install that I could not update I.E. above I.E. 8 until I activated Windows 7 again.
I don't know the reason for this but it took me a hour or so to figure it out.

Both my computers have Windows 7 Update recommended Nvida drivers and I have no problems with them. I don't get newer drivers if I don't have problems. New drivers does not always mean better drivers.

Any time I download or install Windows Updates I do nothing else on the computer. The little extra time in takes out of ones life is short compared to trying to figure out what went wrong and repairing it.
