Hey all, anyone that has moved into an SDD??

1. Have you noticed any differences from the traditional hard drive?
2. If so, are the differences enough to warrant the price?

If you are referring to SSD's yes they are worth the money if you buy a quality one. I use Intel and Samsung.

Once you use a SSD you will wonder what took you so long to do so.
SSD is probably the most single one thing you can do to a computer to increase the speed.

Absolutely. It's a world of difference. I would not have any PC with a HDD any more. I am just getting my 8th SSD. I even use them externally.

They are cheap so I don't know why you refer to costs for ?
Just bought a third for 50.u.s. 128 gig mx100 crucial other 2 were 256gig mx100 crucial's for 109.u.s.

Clean installs were easy once I decided to do it that way

It's such a big difference, that when you use a computer without one again, you get impatient waiting for it to boot and apps to load.

HDD usually average 5 years, but the SDD is supposed to have a much longer lifespan??

Welcome to SF leehop71,

A quality ssd will outlast but more importantly outperform and being non-mechanical be much lower energy and heat intensive, all leading to longer life and greater reliability.
I know of zero added demands on a rigs ram by using an ssd.

They work internally or externally

Their is one problem with a SSD.
Once you use a SSD you will want more of them.

Absolutely not. Where did you get that from.

And they last longer. I have SSDs from 2008 that are still going strong. In the past I had 1 SSD fail and that was replaced free of charge (and even posting).

I told my local Intel dealer to watch for deals on Intel SSD's. When he finds a deal get me two more SSD.
That will make 6 of them for me.
I don't need 6 of them now but maybe later.

SSDs do cost more per GB than HDDs but the difference in performance more than makes up for the higher price. The main performance gains are in reduced boot time, reduced time to open programs, and reduced times for accessing and saving data files. especially large ones. Laptops benefit from reduced operating temperature and increased battery life due to reduced power demands. However, for storing large amounts of data, HDDs still rule.

As others here have said, I will never have another PC that doesn't at least have an SSD for the operating system and programs. My desktop rig has a 128GB Samsung 840 Pro for the OS and programs; my data is stored on two 2TB HDDs and one 4TB HDD. Since my two notebooks only have room for only one drive in each one, I put a 500GB Samsung 840 EVO in each one for the OS, programs, and data storage (my data storage needs are much lower in my notebooks). I just bought another notebook and, if I can't get the Wi-Fi fixed on my oldest notebook, I'll move SSD in the oldest one to the newest one; otherwise, I'll get a new SSD for the newest notebook.

One thing I wish technology could come up with is to be able to back up a complete hard drive and be able to transfer the backup onto a new hard drive without having to install the any software. The biggest pain about getting new drives is the time it takes to set up a new drive.

With imaging you can very easily do what you want to do. And if you want to do it in 3 clicks, use this program:

Even easier and more reliable (in my experience), not to mention free, is to use Macrium Reflect Free (here is a good tutorial on how to use Macrium Reflect). If transferring the entire HDD to the SSD, cloning is easier, faster, and doesn't require an intermediate drive like imaging does. If transferring only a couple of partitions on the HDD, but not the entire HDD, to the SSD, then imaging would be required. If there is enough room on the HDD, the image can be stashed there, then used to "restore" to the SDD. Otherwise, an intermediate drive will be needed to hold the image.

Well I'm not sure what challenges you're describing exactly but imaging a drive to another similar size or larger drive is about as easy as easy gets. Yes Acronis will clone/image a drive.

2. If so, could I image, my HDD, to an External HDD, then transfer to the external SSD, and have the PC boot to the external SSD
