Solved Did a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit - problems with everything

If you haven`t fully updated windows yet, then you are going to get errors trying to install the nvidia driver, (it needs .netframework) run all rounds of windows update until there are no more.

If all that`s been done, and you still have video issues, try the driver right before 344.75

And..... you DO NOT have the cpu graphics enabled in the bios do you ?

Well that took longer than it should have...the comedy of errors continues. The nvidia tool requires java, I installed java, the nvidia tool said I didn't have Java, oracle said I did. In any case, after considerable frustration the correct updated driver is in. As mentioned, something causes the driver installer to crash frequently when making the attempt (nvidia says either a corrupt download or some other software causing problems). Websites are still not displaying properly (layout etc.) and I am still getting some display errors from them. Whether this is because one or more elements of the driver did not in fact install properly or whether there is a hardware issue, an IE issue, or something else I don't know.

IE 11 has been in since the first wave of updates, for what that's worth, thouhg as mentioned in post 10 a couple of IE related updates failed to install.

EDIT: Addram posted while I was writing this: Windows is fully updated, including .net, except for a few updates that failed (and they don't appear related to .net).

EDIT 2: Had a look at the bios and it doesn't look like CPU graphics are enabled

Look for what it is worth I just bought a new Asus laptop with Windows 8 installed and to cut a really long story short the model has a NVidia GTX 860M and to download it's driver I had to get Java where I normally would steer clear of it. However installing the required Java and also the NVidia driver did not get the GTX working and it turns out that the BIOS required updating before the NVidia or any other drivers could be installed for Windows 7

Now I am not suggesting for one moment you should do anything with the BIOS but it is worth keeping in mind. I say this because it occurred to me the machine -an Asus ROG G750JM had been made with Windows 8 to be used and to use Windows 7 like I wanted I had the choice of updating the BIOS or return the unit to the seller for them to do it as they did offer to sell it with Windows 7 but I mistakenly assumed it would be an easy thing to install an SSD and 7.

As I said I only mention this because it related to some degree the problem I had with the new machine.

As a point of interest, I have now attempted to download and install panda cloud antivirus from two separate sources (the main site and a separate download site). In both cases during installation the installer said that files were corrupt (but the program continued trying to install) and hung prior to completion. If it was just one source I'd assume it was just a failed download, but I am beginning to seriously think that the ethernet card in the MB itself is (part of) the problem.

In any case, I've been fighting with this upgrade for nearly two weeks now (a week and change before I started posting), and have spent the equivalent of a second job's worth of time on it. I give up. I'm taking the blasted thing to the store to have their tech support people look at it (and/or replace the hardware as the store's policy is fairly generous when it comes to replacing parts). I appreciate the effort people have put in to help, particularly given that nobody is getting paid for it, but I can't keep doing this.

A hearty thank you to those that tried to help. In circumstances like this should I mark the issue resolved so people at least know not to bother with it any more?

Was there a choice to enable an onboard Display chip in BIOS? If so I would try it, disabling the card if possible to see if you can isolate the card as the problem.

Did you try installing Microsoft Security Essentials?

Do you have a wireless network adapter to plug into a USB port, disable Ethernet adapter in Network and Sharing Center, then try these operations to isolate the ethernet adapter as causing the installer problems?

What was the exact source of the Ultimate disk? Where was it obtained and how was it burned?

You might be able to discover the problem working through the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 as you find the time.

I also thought his Ultimate disc could be shoddy, but since he said it was a retail disc in post #3, I thought it was a non issue.

My original ultimate disk was a full retail copy, however I also burned an image from a site that was referenced earlier (post 4) - I downloaded the image onto a usb drive and used nero on a friend's computer to burn it to a dvd.

The bios does not contain an option to enable an onboard display chip.

I don't have a wireless adapter, unfortunately, making that test impossible to perform at this time.

I did not try downloading microsoft security essentials as I thought it unlikely that two separate sites would contain corrupt versions of panda cloud antivirus and that either it was downloading wrong or windows was reading it wrong.


A bit of clarification on an earlier point - I didn't need java to install the driver, I needed java to run the scan on the nvidia website.

Will do - if I was convinced it wasn't a hardware issue I might have kept going, but I'm not and the window of time in which a hassle free return/exchange is possible was approaching its end. 5-7 days before they have a chance to diagnose, at which point I'll be able to advise further.

You only need Java installed to run the nvidia driver detector, which doesn`t even need to be used because we know the card is a 750 Ti

Well I thought that was the case but this machine I bought wouldn't download anything NVidia even though I searched for the GTX 860M anyway hopefully the seller can put things right/

I have now heard from the repairmen at the store, and they are claiming that it is a hardware problem, though interestingly not a problem with either the motherboard or graphics card. There's an old (several years at least) card I had which had 2 extra IDE connections (once upon a time I had a large number of IDE drives) and they are saying that this is what is causing the problem (I got this second hand through the customer service rep so it's not clear whether the card itself is fundamentally incompatible or whether it just isn't working properly after all this time) - they suggest removing the card and doing a clean reinstall (I guess in case there are drivers or registry keys that are confused) - I am by now heartily sick of the windows installation screens so I'm letting them do it (if only because if it doesn't fix the problem I want them to continue working on it without my having to drop to the back of the line). I will be interested to see if this does correct the problems and will advise further when I get my computer back.

And an additional phone call has come in indicating that the video card itself was also defective. No doubt in a couple of days they'll call again and say the motherboard is too...

Final update - a new graphics card was installed, but the errors persisted. They tested the old graphics card in a different machine and there was no problem. They replaced the processor in my machine, and all errors disappeared. This was a pure hardware issue, it appears.
