Hi, I've been using W7 for quite a while now and, then 2 days ago it started freezing randomly. It seemed to be just the screen as I could see from my modem that my internet was still active, and when I pressed "Caps Lock" etc the appropriate light changed. I was unable to do anything though, apart from hit "reset". Then, yesterday, W7 decided to suddenly stop working. I can get it to "Windows Starting" but the after that I just get a black screen, with no kind of keyboard activity.
All that I've done recently is uninstall the MS audio driver and try to replace it with latest Realtek (R214) drivers, and also connect the 2 x USB 2.0 ports from my case to my motherboard (I've never connected them up before as I've never needed them). By the way I'm currently, and reluctantly, back on XP and all seems to be running okay - audio and case USB 2.0 ports included.
I tried all the StartUp options that I could see: "Safe Mode" "Repair" etc but I always get the same result - black screen with no option but a hard reset.
After checking the "ntbtlog.txt" file created I noticed a large number of items "Did Not Load..."

Apart from having no audio, I had no real problems with W7 prior to this. If it can be helped I'd rather fix W7 than install it again, purely because I don't want to lose all my apps/progs and settings.

If anyone could help explain why this may have happened or, even better, help rectify the problem it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much.

Why don't you get the latest 7000 Build while you still can?
Welcome to Windows 7

I have got it but I don't want to lose all my settings etc. I was under the impression that I can't upgrade from one build to another?
Obviously if I can't fix it soon I will have no choice but to do a clean install to build 7000.

Hello PatchyFog, welcome to Se7en Forums!

Have you done this with your 6801; see the tutorial, at the link below; or did you let it time out?

Hi, yeah my activation was extended thanks.

I just tried "System Repair" again, this time I noticed that it gave me an error stating that the problem was due to a driver upgrade. I guess it must have been the Realtek R214 I installed, although I've tried installing previous versions and never had anything like this happen.

Hello.

Well then you may be able to roll back the driver and solve the problem; or do a system restore to a point before you loaded the driver.

Keep us informed!

I'm pretty sure you can upgrade but from 32bit to 32 bit, not 32 to 64 bit.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1818-upgrade-install-windows-7-beta.html

Hi, thanks for the advice.

Well I stupidly didn't enable system restore for some reason. I think maybe because I was on Vista and XP at the time and only installed W7 to mess with, I didn't expect it to become my main OS, since installing it I barely used anything else til this happened. As for rolling back the drivers, I can't actually access the OS so I'm not sure how I'd do that.

If it is possible to upgrade I'd best get the 64bit version. I had the 64bit build 6801 but when build 7000 was released I chose 32bit instead, just in case I ran into any problems due to a lack of hardware ie only having 1gb of ram.

Thanks for the quick responses, I really appreciate the help.

Well like I said, if you have 32 bit installed and you're going to upgrade, you'd have to install 32 bit again. If you want a clean install you can go with the 64 bit, which I would do.

I'll grab the 64bit build 7000 and try the upgrade, if that doesn't work I'll just reinstall I guess.

Hello again.

If you have 7 set as the default OS at machine boot you can boot into safe mode and roll back the driver, also W7 has a new "repair" option in safe mode if you have the install disk.

It's worth a try; at least maybe you can get your files back.

Hi, that's the problem though, it won't boot into anything. Even "Safe Mode" gives me a black screen. When I use the install disc it says that the installed version is not compatible with the disc, yet I know for certain the one I installed is from this disc.
