Macrium v5 Users Opinions on Macrium v6

When I watched TV in the UK I heard a lot of different dialects. The one from Northern Ireland was quite difficult to understand.

Keep in mind that English is a mongrel language evolved (more like devolved; sadly the devolution continues today) from Old English (actually, Old High German), Middle French (itself a mongrel of Norse, Latin, Gaulish, and Frankish), various Celtic languages, and Latin, amongst a plethora of other languages English freely plunders.

You would be surprised how many slang words and expressions in all of Ireland made it into the U.S.

Are you sure that Old High German got into it. I had to learn that for years but I do not find any traces in the English language. It would make sense though because that's probably what the Angles and the Saxons were speaking. And they settled in GB in the post Roman period.

The main improvement in the V6 pro for me is fast delta restores. If you are restoring a recent image over an existing install it will only restore the differences resulting in vastly improved restore times.[...]

That's a plus for sure.

Lost the other multi-quote along the way, but I believe it was DavidE who answered my other question, pointing out that recovery media made with v5 cannot restore images made with V6.... And that's exactly what I wanted to know.

From other comments it sounded like recovery media made with v6 can restore images made with v5.... which would make sense.

And imho they should have made the imaging of v6 backwards compatible with recovery media created in earlier versions.... at least with v5.

Someone along the way also asked where I got the info of a recovery console, but I believe that was cleared up along the way. On the MR main page for v6 one of the benefits and new features mentioned is "no recovery media required" as you can restore images from a console (I assumed DOS-based that would come up as an option if the drive wasn't booting). But that's a guess. Now I understand one can alternately use media as well/instead of...

A final question...

Are there any compensatory cloud features, ads, or other W10-type functioning in v6? If it is not a non-cloud, stand-alone program, I am personally not interested in changing over.

Anecdotally, was great to see so many FFS users... been a user for many years... keep all data off the C drive, and use FFS nightly to backup the days work to a mem stick, in between monthly MR BUs of all partitions. Also use it for my Music and Archive drive to sync to external BU drives, as it's quicker than MR for mirroring those.

And btw someone referred to me as a 'he' which is reasonable considering my name, but I am a 'she' - not that it matters, but FTR.

Absolutely sure. Old High German (the original Old English) came over to England via the Saxons, Angles, Jutes, Danes (the original Danes did not occupy the Jutland peninsula back then), etc. and quickly crowded out and merged with much of the original Celtic languages along with the invasive Latin. Norse (forgot to mention that one) came over with the Vikings and was also integrated into the language. The Norman invasion brought in Middle French, which became Middle English. Early Modern English came about roughly in the 15th century.

Old English only very vaguely resembles modern English. The pronunciations and spellings of the original words have changed dramatically in most cases. Some that still are easily recognizable are land, house (haus), etc.

The oldest extant examples of Old English is Beowulf. If you read a word for word copy of it, it is pretty much indecipherable to English speakers though German speakers may have an easier time of it. Keep in mind that modern High German has evolved devolved considerably from the Old High German.

An excellent book on how present day English came to be is The Mother Tongue - English And How It Got That Way. It's actually a fascinating read.

Don't feel bad about being called a "he". I get it all the time, even with "Lady" in my user name, mostly on other forums. One thing that doesn't help on other forums is the predominance of men using female avatars. Do they not know the meaning of avatar?

MR does not use the cloud.

Just to be clear, I didn't think it would for storage, but does it use any cloud-related service like even ad-serving or something... does it even offer to "save settings in the cloud" or serve up notices for upgrades or anything like that? (Yes I could install it in the sandbox and see for myself but as long as so many people here are already using it, thought I'd just ask.)

LOL at getting called a "he" even with Lady in your name. That's really lazy! :busted: I don't care but don't want to be misleading if it actually comes up and I don't respond, so... if someone mentions it I will correct, otherwise... non-issue. Doesn't really matter who anyone is ... we're all just here to help and learn.

MR doesn't save anything in the cloud unless you tell it to (and then, it would have to be something of you own, like a cloud drive, that is used like an internal drive). You will get occasional notices of updates every once in a while but those are not a problem. Upgrades are announced by email. and are very infrequent.

LF, thanks for the educational lesson. Middle High German is still somewhat possible to read for me - e.g. the Nibelungen saga. But old high German is very difficult. In fact there are only a few written documents in that language. The Hildebrandslied is one of the few that comes to mind and which we had to study in school.

I use Macrium v5 paid edition (Macrium Reflect Professional). So far I've resisted making the upgrade to the v6 paid edition. However, there might be at least one good reason to do it : Macrium is closing v5 forum on February 17th, and you can't ask questions on v6 forum unless you have a licence number of that version (meaning paid edition, presumably).

Having a dedicated forum for such a critical piece of software is reassuring, and I've found that Macrium technical representatives regularly attended v5 forum, and often replied themselves to calls for help. There were also a bunch of IT expert users who regularly assisted with problems. Presumably, this efficient level of help will also be present on v6 forum, and that's certainly a thing to consider.

Evaluating v6 only from its feature sheet and manual, I was disappointed to find that they did not change the user interface to make it more intuitive. Apparently this was not considered a priority. Main changes, from my point of view, are a new system of forever incrementals and consolidated incrementals, more options and templates for creating a backup plan (schedule and retention rules), and much faster cloning and restoring.

Excerpts of v6 manual addressing some concerns expressed in this thread :
  • v6 is backwards compatible with all Images and File and Folder backups created with earlier versions of Macrium Reflect.

  • Your v5 backup definition files will be loaded into v6 without any conversion.

  • v6 rescue media can restore images from any version of Macrium Reflect.
However...

Version 5 rescue media cannot restore images created with v6 so it is essential to create v6 rescue media when you upgrade.
Come on... that's not a problem. You only have to do it once !

You will get occasional notices of updates every once in a while but those are not a problem. Upgrades are announced by email. and are very infrequent.

Thanks for the details (but they will get no email address from me either...) :)

Only real reason to update AFAIC is the quicker restore process... but it means making all my recovery media over, which I have used many times and know it works, so... making new media, testing it on all machines.... for not much of anything new.... not a big push at this point to move up to v6 in my case.

Appreciate everyone's input.

@ Clairvaux

In my experience places like the Seven forums or My Digital Life will get you much better and quicker help for widely used sftw than the manuf's forum anyway.

I also always use the free versions of programs... a habit from the early years when I often switched programs depending on which new program did a better job than the older one. Waste of money to pay for something then drop it.

MR is one of the programs I've stuck with for several years now, but the free features still suit me fine.

For all those like me I would recommend updating your recovery disc if you now have a UEIF system.
I found out that my old MBR recovery disc would not work on my newer UEIF system.

@ DavidE .... is the screenshot you put in post 12 the actual GUI of MR v6 in W7 ??... or was that a screenshot from W8 or W10...?? B/c that UI alone is enough to keep me on v5. :) I don't like the minimalistic look of post-W7 interfaces.... I likes me my aero and eye candy (since to me the features are not worth switching for anyway... except maybe in time the faster restore).

That looks like a screen print from Win 7, because of the rounded corners on the window.
