Hello,

I just built my first computer with the help of a friend (parts listed in System Specs). Everything is brand new.

I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) with a USB stick that I used to install Windows on my previous desktop with no issue. However, this MSI motherboard has some limitations with installing OS with a USB, so I needed to use their "MSI Smart Tool" to add USB3 driver support.

I managed to successfully install Windows the first time. I then updated my drivers with the CD that came with my motherboard before downloading Steam, Chrome, and some Steam games. I left the computer on overnight to install all the essential Windows updates, but when I woke up it was bluescreened. I wiped the SSD and tried to reinstall Windows, but now it won't even let me use the computer like before before crashing.

- I took everything apart and made sure all cables were secured and in the right sockets.

- I was super careful when handling the CPU and motherboard.

- I did check to make sure all parts were compatible before purchasing them, but I could have missed something.

- I tested each piece of RAM individually and both bluescreened.

- I tried using a new USB and prepped it with a clean Windows 7 .iso file.

Also, note that I'm currently unable to access the crash dump because Windows restarts my computer to finalize the installation. If I try to boot in Safe Mode, it says Windows can't finalize the installation in Safe Mode. If I boot normally, I get a BSOD.

I received a few different BSOD errors. These are some of the BSOD codes I got (I wasn't able to catch a few of them because they went by too fast):

1) page_fault_in_non_paged_area

I hope my formatting wasn't too messy. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to make it easier to read, or if there's anything else you need to know.

Thanks!

Do you have a separate working system on which you could test?

Unfortunately, this is my only computer, and I do not have a separate system I can use to test parts.

I did manage to run MEMTEST from a USB though (I ran one test for each stick of RAM) and neither turned up issues. I'm not sure if the test is 100% accurate, though. Also, the Z270-A motherboard has an "EZDebug LED," and the CPU LED did not light up, so I'm assuming it's not the CPU either, although I'm not quite sure how the EZDebug LED works. However, the VGA LED lit up when I got a red screen of death error.

UPDATE: Up until now I only received BSODs, but now I am getting a bugged red screen of death (it's pixelated and illegible). I tried unplugging the GPU and using integrated graphics to boot up, but got the same error.

Do you see any incompatible parts from my list? Or do you think there is a problem with my motherboard?

I do not know if this is due to overclocking or not, if it is due to overclocking revert back to the SPD.

Hi,
If you want to use xmp profile 1 you might try manually toning down dram frequency to 2400 or so

My friend recommended the RAM and CPU to me, and it seems to be working fine for him out of the box. I am not overclocking. Would overclocking fix the issue?

Hi,
fwiw the i7 7700k has the same memory stat's
Intel Core™ i7-7700K Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.50 GHz) Product Specifications

Your board supports 3000 but not the cpu so you'll most likely have to tone it down in bios and try 2666 or xmp profile 2 which would be pretty close to that.

I read that faster RAM automatically downclocks to match your CPU, and when I checked the BIOS screen it said my RAM was running at about 2400 so I don't believe that to be the issue.

Hi,
One thing that might not be done by default is running at 1.35v which if switched to xmp profile 1 it would be and toning down the dram ... would be a nice test.
Otherwise you could have gotten a bad stick did you run memtest 86+ over night if not how many passes did you run ?
Are you sure you're in the correct slots refer to the mobo manual for which ones to use for 2 sticks.

Yes, I'm sure that I'm in the correct slots for dual channeling (A2 and B2).

This is the exact RAM I bought:
Vengeance® LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 Memory Kit - Black (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15)

The site says it's compatible with x99 and 100 series motherboards, but a lot of people say that information is outdated and that it's compatible with the 200 series as well.

You'll want to use only 1 stick only, due to compatibility with the motherboard.

Further, your RAM runs at 2133MHz SPD which is good meaning no compatibility issues.

This, however, also means that there is a faulty part somewhere.
You may be able to use Ultimate Boot CD - Overview for hardware testing. It has a lot of tests I normally suggest to run.

All right, thanks for the link. I'll do some tests over the next couple days to see if I can get to the bottom of this.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I finally managed to get the computer working. The problem was actually a faulty CPU. Once I swapped that out with a new one, it worked perfectly.

I'm curious if the cpu pins looked perfect or not. The only bad cpus I've seen recently had slightly bent pins.
