If there is a problem with Winsock, Windows will no longer be able to access the Internet. The recommended Microsoft fix is:

1. Run elevated command prompt.
2. Type netsh winsock reset > ENTER:
3. The following message should be seen: "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the computer in order to complete the reset."
4. Restart computer.

Winsock Reset.bat

contents of winsock reset bat
netsh winsock reset catalog (resets winsock entries)
netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (resets TCP/IP stack)

I just want to say Thank You for all the assistance. I would have eventually found most, if not all, of the resources you gave me. It made fixing this so much easier. Yesterday I started with 7 updates, Windows Soxket Error 11004, and SFC would run but fix nothing.


Today, after following your advice, the cat/num pair corruption was corrected, the list of 7 updates grew to 16 total (one had to be manually applied) all the rest were handled by Windows Update. Two consecutive update checks came up with the OS being completely up to date.


After running AutoSURTx64 SFC repaired successfully and the Windows Socket Error was gone but returned after 6 or 7 reboots while applying updates, I updated one item at a time instead of all at once so there was a few restarts. I had to run SFC from safemode to get success.


For S&G's I ran SFCfix again. It came back with the same report as I posted earlier (1 SURT error). I ran AutoSURTx64 again and it repaired the error. I think it was the same error again. Currently I am error free but I'm curious what would cause this error to resurface and how to correct it permanently......


After all this the equip manufacturer contacted me today. I'm awaiting info on getting a replacement SSD with a fresh and complete disk image. Go figure.....

Would be nice to know how the new SSD performs. Hopefully it will correct your problem.
Looking at your posts and the CheckSUR.log
Manifests all zeros means the filename is there but the data contained therein is not. Recurring problem, I would say your drive is taking a dump or had an issue from day 1.

When you get the new drive installed, please let us know if that corrected you issues.

Just want to give an update. I talked to Mfg. tech support on Friday. Sometime this week I should be getting a replacement SSD with an untouched drive image on it. I'm also going to replace the CMOS battery for S&G's.

You can open them without execution with WinRAR. It is created with the SXS function.
To use it you place the payload, i.e. cat, mum, & manifests in the appropriate subfoldera of CheckSUR.
The simple batch script copies the CheckSUR folder to the appropriate location, C:\Windows\Temp\, then runs the System Update Readiness Tool, upon completion of SURT, the CBS folder is copied to the desktop.

I have an update.


Replacement SSD arrived today. I swapped it out, booted and waited for windows to setup after booting it. I connected it to the internet to run Windows Update and it initially said I had 37 updates. 36 installed and one failed. It seems I have the same error as before with the update that failed.SFC will successfully repair errors but the issue returns. I am guessing that I have some other piece of hardware that is failing but the tests I have run don't identify the culprit.


Anyone have any suggestions? At this point my only other option is to contact my manager and get her working on a replacement for the test equipment. The PC that runs it will not support upgrading to win10. It has 2GB ram, and Intel Atom 450 CPU, and is around 9-10 years old. In the meantime all I can do is nurse it along until it finally fails......

sfc /scannow continues to report errors you say.
If the repair/replacement files are not in the winsxs folder, the errors remain.

Will do. Question, the log will tell me which file has the issue, correct? If so I should be able to Either locate those files somewhere on the web or can I copy them from a computer with a Windows 7 OS on it? I do have access to a Windows 7 computer.

Yes the logs will tell you, provided you know how to read them!
%windir%\logs\CBS\CBS.log
SFCFix.exe will open its log in notepad when completed.
If you have corrupt files/folders you will have to attempt to determine which KB (windows update number) the apply to. There are no clues in the file/folder name. It is not a simple process to determine the KB.
The CBS log can be thousands of entries.

When finished the CBS folder will be placed on your Desktop. AutoSURT contains Microsoft's System Update Readiness Tool (SURT), with a short batch script and a folder entitled CheckSUR. You can open the executable with WinRAR if you wish to peruse the contents.
The CheckSUR.log will tell you what was fixed and which files/folders you need to locate for repairs. If you have registry entries that are corrupt, that can be a problem.
