Dell says that there are no supported drivers or scanning software for my printer. Can I use a third party drivers and third party scanning software? My Win XP installation disk won't properly install on Win 7. Thanks!

You might try the Vista drivers for your printer. Most Vista drivers should work in 7.

If you're running the 32 bit version of Windows 7, try the Vista drivers, available from support.dell.com.

Drivers & Downloads

You may have to use some work-arounds to get them toinstall on Win7, but I expect that they'll work.

There are also drivers on Windows Update that claim to support Win7.

Thanks for the tip. I found a compatible driver here. However, I still am looking for some software to use for scanning. The Dell CD had the Dell All In One center, but that doesn't seem to work in Win 7.

Anyone have any third party scanning software that would work with my Dell AIO 922?

The Dell 922 driver works fine on two of our system. There are two downloads available from the Dell site. One includes the driver and software, R151371.exe. This is the one you want. The trick with installing this printer is you have to execute the file first and then connect the printer when it tells you. Don't start by connecting the printer first and letting Windows find the drivers.

Since you already have the printer installed you need to uninstall it first. The best way is to run the patch from the same Dell driver download site. The file is R166239. Run this file, reboot, then run the R151371 file to install the printer.

I have two of these printers attached to two different computers and they both print and scan fine. On the one computer we did an upgrade installation from Vista and it didn't work at all after the upgrade. Running the patch and re-installing did the trick.

Good luck.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the printer. Were you able to get the Dell All-In-One center to work as well? Also, would you mind posting links to the files you are referencing? Thank you.

Yes, the all in one center works just fine. I've done several scans with it to pdf's and jpg's.

The driver is for Vista and you can find the driver and the patch/removal tool here:

There are 3 files listed. Which two did you use? Also, I have a 64 bit version of Win 7 Pro. Are you also using 64 bit?

I'm using the 32 bit version.

I first ran the one called "patch/upgrade". Then I ran the one called "Driver" which installed the driver and the application. I notice under the compatibility tab it only mentions 32 bit for Vista.

However, the third option called "application" mentions support for 64 bit version. My understanding is that this was the application only and not the driver but I could be wrong about that.

Cheers.

Yeah it isn't the application. It is the driver. I have been able to install drivers and the printer is printing. However, I have been thus far unable to use the Dell All In One Center. At present I am using VueScan, which is working fine. I'm just more familiar with the AIOC, so I would prefer that.

I will give it another shot and post back. I have 64 bit version, so maybe that is why I can't get this to work.

Help!

I am facing the same problems as you guys. BUT: for me the mentioned solution doesn't work. When I try to install the R153719 driver I get the error message "GUI data missing in XML file". So strangely I can only install the Fax ;(

I am using the 64bit Win7 version.

That error sounds like there is something missing in the driver package. Try these steps:
Download the cleanup utility and drivers again. Unplug your 922. Disconnect the internet. Run the clean up utility. After that is complete, make sure the 922 is no longer listed in Control Panel<Printers. If it is, go into Device Manager via Right-click My Computer<Properties<System<Device Manager. Scroll down to Printers and uninstall the 922 entry and scan entry. Restart the computer. Install the drivers that you downloaded.

Hopefully that will solve things for you. If not, post back and let us know what the error is. Good luck!

Dell 922 (All In One) not compatible with Win 7?

I had windows vista 32 bit and used my dell aio922 printer with R151371.exe from dell.
When i upgraded to windows 7 i used the same windows vista compat. software from dell, but i i got an error printer cannot communicate with computer when attempting to print something? I even removed the printer from device driver and reinstalled with windows vista sp2 compatability turned ON. Does anyone have a solution for this problem or know if there is a solution?
I even tried using windows update but it got hung and never came back.

Hi Andrew, you may try some of the suggestions already posted and then post back if you still have an issue. Did you try the Dell Printer removal tool? Most likely Win 7 installed the printer for you and those drivers are incompatible with the one's from Dell.

If I understand you correctly you removed the printer from the list of devices. This doesn't do the trick and you need to uninstall it completely. I had a similar issue after the upgrade and also tried to removed it from the list of devices but that didn't work. You need to run the patch executable from the Dell drivers site (see my earlier post with the link). Reboot making sure the printer is disconnected. Once the reboot is done, keep the printer disconnected, and run the driver install from Dell. It will instruct you when to connect the printer.

Before I ran the patch executable I uninstalled the printer using the Programs & Features option in control panel. I don't think this was necessary but it certainly didn't hurt.
