Hello

I installed win7 32bit 3 weeks ago or so and was absolutley satisfied with it, until couple of days ago. I tried to install toshiba value added package (it makes toshiba flash cards work) and after that my windows 7 started to work very slow. Task manager showed that CPU usage was most of the time arround 80%. All i had was utorrents and kaspersky AV running. I turned of everything and CPU usage went to 8% or so but when i open anything it jumps up again. Everything started working slower, games that worked perfectly became unplayable. I restored system to an earlier point but it didnt help. I reinstalled windows and it did help somewhat but i still think that everything worked better a week ago.
I have toshiba satelliteA200 with core 2 duo 1.6, 3gb ram, video ATI HD2600.

First get back to normal, use system restore or system image to go back to the time it was working. Then we could determine your best course of action, regarding removing programs.

Do not install it then? If you did install it after you reinstalled the OS?

As i said in my first post i tried that right after the problem started. It didnt help.

Do not install it then? If you did install it after you reinstalled the OS?

No i actually did not. After reinstalation of 7 i didnt instal value package.

Those 80% CPU must be going some where, what does the task manager tells you? which app is consuming all that CPU?

This sounds like the Toshiba value added package may have replaced some of the core DLLs without properly registering the changes. Even re-installing Windows may not cure the problem if you re-installed over the previous installation.

Did you try installing to another partition, or re-formatting your hard disk before installing again? I know that's a lot of work for a newly installed OS, but sometimes OEMs (like Toshiba) take a few liberties with their software in order to make their products appear faster, even if it has a negative impact on overall system performance.

Another possibility is that you have a virus/trojan, a root kit, or even a spam-bot that got into your system. Try using one or more of the AV boot CDs to scan your system. If you have been root kitted, it may be the only way to detect it.

A couple of things you can try... Boot into safe mode..is it still sluggish.... open msconfig..startup...disable all...reboot.. if this helps, begin adding the entries back one by one untill you find the offending entry... I would be sure to do a complete scan with your a/v program first though...Good Luck..

Well thats sounds a lot like my problem. When i reinstalled windows i used custom instalation, i did not format my HD. I dont have any viruses or trojans, checked with kaspersky, ad-aware and auslogics boost speed.

The problem is that sometimes CPU meter shows normal consumption. But the games and overall windows performance for example are much slower than they used to be.

Just for grins and giggles uninstall Kaspersky and see how your system responds... Kaspersky has been known to cause these type of issues in Windows 7 ...

If you want to try restore original windows dll's try running SFC /scannow from the run command :)

Well im happy to report that my windows is working like a charm once again. I did as sclausnitzer suggested, formated my HD and reinstalled. Ill give kaspersky a shot because i dont think that it caused the problem.

Thanks for the help all of you!

Alfarin:

This sounds like a hardware or driver problem. Here are some quick ideas off the top of my head......

If the experience index was at 4.5 when you first got the unit, and in a very short time it has dropped to 2.7, then perhaps your computer requires special drivers that are not installed by default when you re-image your laptop, but I doubt it.

It could also be a setting in the bios. Perhaps a power-saving setting that throttles the CPU or the bus speed (which affects both CPU and RAM). You do have the laptop plugged in don't you?

Did you upgrade the RAM? if you used slower RAM, the laptop will slow down to prevent errors.

Finally, take it to your retailer and have them test it. It could be an actual hardware failure. If so, hopefully they will swap it out.
