Retiring Windows 7 Anyone Else?

[edit] I know this is true because I dual boot with Linux, though because of my distrust for MS I always detach the drives I don't want windows on, I never trust MS. NEVER!

I too learned that lesson (the hard way) many years ago. My multi-boot systems has a couple HDs and I use the BIOS boot HD selector to control which is the primary boot drive. When I loaded Win7, I unplugged my "personal" drive (Linux and XP), loaded a "work" installation of XP, dual booted it with Win7, then reconnected the other Linux/XP drive.

Now when I want to use my "personal" version of XP or my Linux every-day-use installation I make that drive primary at bootup.

Regards,
GEWB

Get grub2 and just use the linux bootloader to load all the os's. it's real nice too and grub2 works very very very well.

Yes I plan to retire W7 - I have bought a copy to upgrade my PC and will be going back to XP after 3 days of trying W7.

1. the installation went well, I was impressed

2. opened folder, where is the menu with file/view etc etc. After a while got the answer from help and now they show. Waste of an hour.

3. where is the 'up' button. I always use ctrl-up to open the parent directory. Breadcrumps don't do this. Getting ever so slightly pissed off.

4. Downloaded the lated ATI driver clearly labelled Windows 7 from the manfacturer's website. Ran it, failed to install. Shut computer down to re-boot, crash dump. ati....dll (forgot the name) writing pointer or something. Rolled back and will have to it seems live with a 1024 desktop and somewhat bigger icons. Oh, and because I don't have the video driver I can't get aero and I can't even get a screen saver as it says the graphics card needs updating (I had a screen saver using windows 3.1 if I recall, but I supose this is progress).

5. Audio has still got a yellow question mark in device manager so after scouring the internet (not using this machine) I go to the AC79 website (.tw domain) and get the contexent AC97 driver package for W7, does not install.

So far 6 hours, no sound, low res screen

Download copy of Mavis 'up' button woohoo I can now do ctrl-up

5. Something wierd about dragging files from one folder to another. Hard to explain but as I drag to the target folder, the line across is sort of highlighted and if this line contains a folder the dragged file is put in that, not the target folder. Did not work like this on XP. I have to make sure there is a file on the line, not a folder.

6. Auto arrange is driving me nuts.

7. Next day: copied file from my digital camera (P007892... etc), did my usual rename trick (highlight all the files, right-click first in list and rename to 20091125 (01). Great, the files are renamed in order BUT I think they are not the order of original naming. My first photo is named 20091125 (05), the second 06, etc etc. Oh of course I have to STILL put the '0' in for files (1) to (9) but to be fair XP does that too.

I don't like having to click'more details' to get the name of the file currently being copied, life is too short to do this on every copy. Why Microsoft hid this info on the copy progress box is beyond me.

8. Plugged my ext hard drive in to install a few programs. Warning about hard drive needing to be scanned for errors. Funny, it never did that on XP. Let it scan, but to jump forward it always does this now. Every time I plug it in it asks to scan for errors. Yes I am using the right method to remove it.

9. Installed thumbsplus V7 which is what I use for my photos. Seems to work OK but later found out when cropping a photo and then saving it back it won't save. Gee thanks.

10. next 24 hours spend trying to get on internet. I am using mobile broadband, vodafone mobile connect. Got latest from vodafone website, installs but won't connect to internet. After much messing around found modem is on COM3 but software is addressing COM4. No idea how to change this, so no internet for me (on the W7 laptop). ps tried to change modem to COM4 but then said could not load the drivers.

11. Microsoft Office installs correctly - wonderful. However can't see my spreadsheets properly because of screen resolutiuon problem.

12. Installed east CD-DA Extractor v12 application (use it for my music ripping, conversion etc), will not install. As far as I know I have the latest version.

So, in summary, I have no sound, a low res screen, no aero, no screen saver, can't use my ext hard drive in without it wanting to scan, have to walk on eggshells when copying files from folder to folder, have to download a 3rd-party app to get the folder navigation function I had in XP, applications don't work, rename causes data corruption and I can't get on the internet. Yes, i went back to XP

What's discouraging is that each of these laundry list items aired here could have been brought in here as a forum topic and knocked off in a night. By now others have experienced these issues so their solutions are just a Google search away.

Why people would be more interested in posting laborious lists detailing why they are abandoning the future when they haven't taken that much time to research their complaints is the nature of the human beast today.

But, hey, sometimes I'd rather be drivin the Dart anyway.

Agree with you there greg!!

I'm one of those that fully embraced Vista .. and I was really happy with it unlike some .. so going back to toytown XP would be an odd thing to do for me!!

I still can't get the 'Homegroup' thing to work though ..

Enjoy your XP. It is an excellent OS and very well supported. When you come back we will still be here.

Sorry that you had so many problems. For me Windows 7 has been a joy to work with even on very old equipment (my laptop is a Dell C600 with PIII and 512 ram).

Runing Crysis flawlessly on my current system (see specs). No issues I could not fix with the help of these very forums.

Yeah I lump it in the group of ****tards. People seem to be so good at using the internet, but so ****ing retarded at using search engines. It's not like the idea of indexing hasn't been around for a while? No? Gee, then why the hell were we taught it in school! No gregrocker I'm not yelling at you, but I'm agreeing with what you said. People should learn to search more and bitch less.

"And come on, those of you in love with 7 no matter what comes your way; let the people who have switched back tell their stories and direct your hate towards me. I'm not scared, bring it on!:p "

Why in the world would anyone hate you? Pity, maybe but certainly not hate. I had a program that wouldn't run with Windows7, too. It was a really old Spanish/English dictionary. I spent $50 and bought a new one which I happen to like much better.

And I never realized a 68-year old klutz like me could be a major geek. I don't even own eight computers but I didn't seem to have any problem with a program that didn't install properly. When the box popped up saying, "Did the program install correctly," I clicked, "No." I didn't realize that moved me into Geek of the Week. Go figure.

So, enjoy WindowsXP. I'd suggested to find hate, if that's what you want, you need to go to a political forum.

I liked Vista. I built my pc especially for vista, so it had 4 gigs of ram at 1066Mhz and a dual core cpu etc and it was rock solid and pretty fast.

Most complaints relating to vista where that it was slow, but these were from people running it on 1 gig of 400Mhz ram and a pentium 4 etc. People seemed to expect a new OS to run on less than XP lol.

For me windows 7 is a major let down. It feels and looks like a service pack for vista thats gone wrong. Im sticking with it till the next imacs get released next year and then il make my mind up.

Time to relight this fire!

I don't drive a Dodge Dart!

I trade each of my three vehicles every four years. And you know what? The work right out of the box!!!!!!!!!!:D If I have a problem with one I don't turn to the internet and Goggle how to fix it, I don't wait for a service pack to come along in six months, I bring it to the dealership and let them worry about fixing the problem.

Don't get me wrong. I don't expect everything to work perfectly with a new OS, a little tinkering is OK, but I'm looking at more then a little tinkering. For my machine I'm looking at waiting for a service pack, or newer drivers, or something like that. I have no idea when these are coming, and until then I'm stuck with a wonky install. Remember, I've been working with 7 for about five months and waiting for updates... Blah, blah, blah....

Many of you are quick to blame hardware manufacturers for lame support for 7. OK, I'll bite! 7100 and 7600 both had a hardware problem with respect to the screen saver. Huh? That's right my screen saver will not work until I install the 7 drivers for the mouse that I downloaded from the manufacturer!!!
:sick:I have a Microsoft Mouse:sick:

Duh:p
As far as the post from mangotango with respect to the reply from gregrocker. Crap, mangotango's issues would not have been solved in a night on sevenforums or anyplace else for that matter. He is right to shelve 7 and wait for a service pack to come out till he goes back to 7. Let us remember that:
:cry:Sevenforums would not be so wildly popular or even exist if 7 were as perfect as the guru's claim it to be!:p
That's enough for now. I'll chime in again later to fire you up again.:)

And lets remember, I really like 7 and can't wait till it's mature enough for me.:sarc:

It's a personal choice.

If you don't like an OS, use the one you do like.

I've used just about every windows OS since 3.0, and I like them all. Always seemed to stay with the new one, takes a little while to get adjusted to them.

Windows 7 works great for me, so I'll stay with it. Doesn't mean anyone else should.

Enjoy which ever one you prefer, but you know this is a Windows 7 website, so don't be surprised if most of the people here like Windows 7.

I prefer 7

I like Windows 7 and as far as it's content I prefer 7 to XP, honestly! It's simply that despite months of searching, trying betta drivers, many many installs it has issues (for some) that I can't afford to overcome. I don't want to have to buy hardware known to work with 7 now when in a few months from now improved drivers from manufacturers and a service pack will come along and everything I'm having issues with now will be solved.

In a nutshell I much prefer 7 to XP but it isn't working for me yet and I'm ok with waiting for resolution to it's current issues till adopting it for my main OS.

As for recommending it to others, I don't. My recommendation to them is to wait and when it's time for them to upgrade their hardware, purchase a new computer with 7 preinstalled. If I recommend to people that they upgrade to 7 and they have problems with compatibility I feel a sense of obligation to help them get it running properly, and I should.

Once again; I feel 7 is far superior to XP but at this point I find it to time consuming to have to find solutions to compatibility issues that arise around every corner.

What strike me as the most humorous of all these posts, is the simple fact that so many forgot what XP was like when it was first released. XP had twice as many problems as 7 does now.

BTW, an os is not a car. Apples and oranges comes to mind. :)

Retired and living in the middle of nowhere on the west slope of the Rockies.
It's very true that when XP came along there was a considerable wait for service pack 1. But I reckon a lot of people who are giving up with 7 remember that XP came after 98/ME/NT/2000 and it was a big leap so we all were braced for a few problems back then. When XP first hit my machine it ran M.S. Office, printed and browsed around the hard drives with a speed and stability that was impressive, so I stuck with it and, as many on this forum have pointed out, the fixes came along so we could run the toys. On the release of 7 I think a there are quite a few who expected it to be the salvation of the Vista disappointment. Problem is the failure to provide the performance that people who use PC's all day for business, (and probably many home users), expect or hope for. 7 is brill, it's shiny and I want it, but I have things to do with my time and waiting two or three seconds for a folder to open or an application to print while 7 is being "clever" is just irritating. So I think it may be the responsiveness or "feel" of the system, rather than how it looks, is more important to a lot of people. I am not investing in i7 just to run M.S. Office, so 7 is off my PC and clunky old XP is back.
