Yes I plan to retire W7 - I have bought a copy to upgrade my PC and will be going back to XP after 3 days of trying W7.
1. the installation went well, I was impressed
2. opened folder, where is the menu with file/view etc etc. After a while got the answer from help and now they show. Waste of an hour.
3. where is the 'up' button. I always use ctrl-up to open the parent directory. Breadcrumps don't do this. Getting ever so slightly pissed off.
4. Downloaded the lated ATI driver clearly labelled Windows 7 from the manfacturer's website. Ran it, failed to install. Shut computer down to re-boot, crash dump. ati....dll (forgot the name) writing pointer or something. Rolled back and will have to it seems live with a 1024 desktop and somewhat bigger icons. Oh, and because I don't have the video driver I can't get aero and I can't even get a screen saver as it says the graphics card needs updating (I had a screen saver using windows 3.1 if I recall, but I supose this is progress).
5. Audio has still got a yellow question mark in device manager so after scouring the internet (not using this machine) I go to the AC79 website (.tw domain) and get the contexent AC97 driver package for W7, does not install.
So far 6 hours, no sound, low res screen
Download copy of Mavis 'up' button woohoo I can now do ctrl-up
5. Something wierd about dragging files from one folder to another. Hard to explain but as I drag to the target folder, the line across is sort of highlighted and if this line contains a folder the dragged file is put in that, not the target folder. Did not work like this on XP. I have to make sure there is a file on the line, not a folder.
6. Auto arrange is driving me nuts.
7. Next day: copied file from my digital camera (P007892... etc), did my usual rename trick (highlight all the files, right-click first in list and rename to 20091125 (01). Great, the files are renamed in order BUT I think they are not the order of original naming. My first photo is named 20091125 (05), the second 06, etc etc. Oh of course I have to STILL put the '0' in for files (1) to (9) but to be fair XP does that too.
I don't like having to click'more details' to get the name of the file currently being copied, life is too short to do this on every copy. Why Microsoft hid this info on the copy progress box is beyond me.
8. Plugged my ext hard drive in to install a few programs. Warning about hard drive needing to be scanned for errors. Funny, it never did that on XP. Let it scan, but to jump forward it always does this now. Every time I plug it in it asks to scan for errors. Yes I am using the right method to remove it.
9. Installed thumbsplus V7 which is what I use for my photos. Seems to work OK but later found out when cropping a photo and then saving it back it won't save. Gee thanks.
10. next 24 hours spend trying to get on internet. I am using mobile broadband, vodafone mobile connect. Got latest from vodafone website, installs but won't connect to internet. After much messing around found modem is on COM3 but software is addressing COM4. No idea how to change this, so no internet for me (on the W7 laptop). ps tried to change modem to COM4 but then said could not load the drivers.
11. Microsoft Office installs correctly - wonderful. However can't see my spreadsheets properly because of screen resolutiuon problem.
12. Installed east CD-DA Extractor v12 application (use it for my music ripping, conversion etc), will not install. As far as I know I have the latest version.
So, in summary, I have no sound, a low res screen, no aero, no screen saver, can't use my ext hard drive in without it wanting to scan, have to walk on eggshells when copying files from folder to folder, have to download a 3rd-party app to get the folder navigation function I had in XP, applications don't work, rename causes data corruption and I can't get on the internet. Yes, i went back to XP
