Yes, re-boot and if the install fails, I concur with Corrinne and perform a system restore. I puzzled as to how the antimalware package failed to install as I do not see the update in my logs!

zapvill, have you made a change to your system so that Windows Defender is also running on your computer? I have the MSE updates but do not have the Anti-malware updates in Windows Update history. If you have turned on the Defender service, I suggest you undo that change as MSE includes the same definitions and capabilities as Defender.

I dont believe defender was on as I had to turn it on and manually update when i discovered my mse problem. but it could have changed when everything else did.

Im baffled here. why did update first reconfigure then remove mse while updating the malware tool in between?

Hi, zapvill.

Congratulations on the successful restore. Yea, Windows 7!

As to what caused the problem, I have no idea. I guess it has to be chalked up to being a fluke this time.

I had a similar problem to this today and it is apparently linked to an update that came in yesterday and I installed it this morning. It uninstalled the old MSE but would not finish installing the updated one. It then told me to turn back on windows defender so I did and it updated it. I even went and reinstalled the old complete MSE from the website and tried updating it through the icon near the clock but it said it could not be updated. After I tried 3 times, I gave up and installed avast.

They updated MSE earlier today. I was lucky and all my computers sailed right through it.

For those having problems, look in C:\Program Data > Microsoft and delete the "Microsoft Security Essentials" folder, then try reinstalling it with a freshly downloaded version. Deleting the old folder gets rid of all the installation and upgrade logs, meaning it won't keep trying to pick up where it left off.

Let me know if this works. As I said, I had no problems and can't try it for myself, so this is just an educated guess. :p

yes it seems that when mse failed to update it somehow corrupted itself with an incomplete uninstall. I turned auto update off so I may have the opportunity to monitor my computers updates. I am willing to bet I would have been able to prevent the update program from attempting the uninstall in the first place if I had been there to make the decisions. the previously failed update installed without a glitch this afternoon after the restore. I am thankful for all the great help I received and am officially addicted to sevenforums. Thanks again.

Extra information for when this occurs with the recent Microsoft Security Essentials upgrade
The above problem is also occurring With the Automatic Microsoft Security Essentials upgrade that they put out several days ago. The upgrade fails. Windows gives an error that there is no virus software loaded. Microsoft Security Essentials does not appear on the Add/Remove list under control panel. Attempts to install it from scratch fails with this error.. 0x8004FF07
Microsoft has a series of solutions available. Apparently this was kind of a bad upgrade in some ways. Just FYI
