... Go back to simple math.

Heh, I actually have a theory on the cause of all this commotion: Us being acquainted to more complex mathematics, mainly algebra, we tend to forget the simplicity of simple problems such as this. We are very used with the x and y equations that we try to apply it to this one too (not that it shouldn't; I'm talking very down to earth here).

For example, take the equation x²/y(x+1). Upon seing the equation, we would do the groupings first and then distribute it, as we know we can barely do anything with dissimilar variables. Since almost every problem bombarded to us usually involves dissimilar variables, it becomes instict to simplify everything first and mostly do division last.

My teacher always told me: "Once you become an expert engineer knowing complex things, you would tend to forget even the simplest of equations"

The way I was taught, you do the (9+3) first, multiply 2 with 12 and only then divide 48÷24.

Wow. Don't overthink it folks. Go back to simple math.

48÷2(9+3) Once you do the work in brakets this question becomes
48÷2x12 At this point you follow the math rule that you do complex problems in the order they appear, which gives you
24x12= 288

For the formula
eaf5fb94cdde6ebf19ba1713621fba1.gif

what is the value of d when u = 3, v = 11 and t = 5?
http://www.mathopolis.com/questions/q.php?id=1134

Like I stated before where is the division sign? There isn't one.

The division sign is replaced by the slash making it a fraction and it is placed EXACTLY where the division sign was.

48/ 2(9+3)= 2

The division sign is replaced by the slash making it a fraction and it is placed EXACTLY where the division sign was.

That's just different notation.

Division is often shown in algebra and science by placing the dividend over the divisor with a horizontal line, also called a vinculum or fraction bar, between them. For example, a divided by b is written

2e06f98701af77a75327d4da74c11479.png

This can be read out loud as "a divided by b", "a by b" or "a over b". A way to express division all on one line is to write the dividend, or numerator then a slash, then the divisor, or denominator like this:

Two answers: 2 or 288

I first saw this on another forum and then subsequently on others. The amount of threads arguing which answer is the correct one is hilarious.

So where does SF stand?

I think I found the division sign Mike. ;) Give Topper an apple for me will ya? Thanks
