5pin Fan conection on HP Z400 Workstation?

I was looking to upgrade my heat-sink and fan on my HP Z400 Workstation LGA1366 XEON W3530 with a Corsair A70 Cooler. Fitment of the A70 shouldn't be a problem but the fan pinout is.
HP uses a 5-Pin connection with a black wire that jumpers the two outer pins.

The fan itself uses 4 wires

- Blue
- Green
- Yellow
- Black

The fifth pin is after the yellow and is connected with a small wire to the black fan pin.


Corsair gives me 3pin fan connections and Y adapters to run a push pull setup.
No 5 pin adapter in sight.

Should I rig my own adapter, and how?

Doing 3D renders
So far temps are in 65-70c with the Xeon and Stock cooler
I get about 47c max on my other computer w/ LGA775 Core2Quad with a Rocketfish Push Pull Setup and that is a much smaller heatsink then the Corsair A70.
I can put the A70 on my LGA775 but that seems like a waste.

idle temps are fairly close about 32 for the xeon and 28 with the quadcore with aftermarket cooler.

Just so you know Liquid cooling is not something I want deal with.

closest thing I found was a
USB/KK Header Connector 1 X 5

in black so if I had to make my own connection I would probably use that. Just need some way of telling which wires are what.

Do you think it would be wise to pigtail off the 5pin header, connecting the two A70 fans to the stock fan and moving the stock CPU fan over to the back of the case for case cooling.

3 fans off one CPU connection seems a bit much, I don't want to fry something. :(


I'm guessing the 5pin color code is as follows

Black_________ GND (Pin 1)
Yellow / Red___ 12v
Green / Yellow_ Sensor
Blue__________ Control
Black_________ GND

My rear case fan uses a 4pin

Black (Pin 1)
Yellow
Green
Blue

The Corsair fans that came with the A70 are not PWM, just 3 pin
So I guess I just line up pin 1 and then connect both grounds?

Black (Pin 1)
Yellow (Pin 2)
Green (Pin 3)
----- (Empty)
Black (Pin 5)


now the question is will my computer be safe from overheating if the sensor wire is not there?

I believe Dell has a 5pin too, but then dell has always had frustrating proprietary parts.

Anyways yes the motherboard does use a 5pin, to my dismay. And on top of that every 4 pin header on the board doesn't allow for a 3pin to fit like other motherboard 4pin headers I've seen. No problem though I just shaved off the tab on the 3pin connection and it worked fine.


I just pulled a Nidec Beta V 120mm fan from another Dell, I've always had good results with Nidec even though the smaller Betas can be loud at times. I'll use this for case cooling.
4 wire lead
white=TAC sensor
red=power
black=gnd
blue=PWM control
empty=empty
5 pin Dell connector

Jeeeze

this fan uses 12v 1.40A

my other 120's use 12v .18A

I may have to connect this Nidec to the Molex from the PSU





On a side note can a 4pin PWM fan be used to control a 3pin fan if the blue wire from the 4pin is on the CPU connection but powered seperately from the PSU or Case fan connection, and the 3pin fans take up the remaining pins on the CPU connection?

do iI need to use the ground wire or can I just run the blue wire?

Well i just jumpstarted my PC pr shall I say crashed it when a wire (BARE) touched my case... fortunaely things are fine. :) I don't know how I forgot to insulate it.

Currently running the fan off the MOLEX and MB.

MOLEX
RED - 12v
BLACK - GND
BLACK - EMPTY
YELLOW - EMPTY


4PIN on MB
BLUE - CONTROL FROM NIDEC
YELLOW - SENSOR FROM NIDEC
RED - EMPTY
BLACK - EMPTY

Fan functions just fine, and uses RPM features of motherboard to control fan speed, without the MB connection the fan runs at full speed.

Right now they only thing it's cooling it me :D


next test is to run power wires from a seperate 3pin fan to the same MB connection.

But my guess is it might not effect the RPM of the 3pin fan.

EDIT:

nope, doesn't work. 3pin will always be the same RPM

Also confirned both the Sensor and Control wires both need to be connected to the MB or else the fan speed will not be controlled for a 4pin powered by a Molex.

This may be late for you install but I like to run all fans off the PSU and as little off the mobo as possible. Also the H70 pump needs to be powered off a std. fan header and not the CPU fan headed per Corsair's instructions.

not the best temps, but a lot better then before when it was running 65c-75c at 100% load and 35c-40c at idle
I did draw a rather lumpy line with the A70 Thermal Compound, I decided to use it instead of an old AS5 I had laying around.
Also note this isn't installed exactly per instructions although the instructions were not the most detailed to begin with.

core temp and real temp were showing +/-1c variance from eachother
next mod will be adding a 120mm Nidec Beta V fan to vent the case.


Ambient rooms temps usally between 28c and 32c

Something I find strange

there is an ambient temp sensor at the front of my case. If I hold it in my hand the the temp goes up like expected and the fans spin faster... but if I look at the bois temp for the cpu the CPU temp raises at the same time as the ambient. It does not do this when in windows running Core Temp or Real Temp.

Could this be becase the cpu temp has a logical relation to ambient temp meaning that the system assumes it's difficult to cool the CPU below ambient air temp, unless of course your're running it in a Venturi where there is pressure drop thus lower temps or using compressed air with Vortex Tubes as spot cooling.
