I've been looking around, this does seem to be a sticky wicket. One possible solution is Debian 3, which can be installed via floppy disks. However, you need internet as it downloads files. And my wife does not want this computer on line. So that's out (unless I want to live dangerously).
Also, there are Linuxes that actually fit on a floppy. none of them have a GUI, however, which is a must for me. So, Getting Puppy to boot somehow still is the best option. It is a very impressive OS, full-featured yet light enough for that machine. So for now the quest will go on. Although I wouldn't give much for the odds of success.
