ATI Radeon drivers install, but fail to initialize

I have just installed Windows 7, and am running across a few problems already. I have an ATI Radeon HD 4650 AGP card, and when I install the Windows 7/Windows Vista driver, everything goes smoothly. I reboot and nothing has changed, and Catalyst fails to run. I try to run the Control Center, and it also fails to run. There are no errors or anything. This is really aggravating...
Can anyone help me out here? I'm a bit lost. I know that ATI doesn't officially support AGP, but I also tried their little AGP hotfix. No go.

What if anything did Windows install for the AGP/GART driver? Without that your AGP card won't work properly. Looking at the specs for your computer/motherboard,

Motherboard Specifications, A7V8X-LA (Kelut) - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

and what is available from Via (there won't be anything from HP) I doubt there will ever be any Windows 7 chipset drivers, but you can try the Vista one. Start here,

VIA Drivers Download - VIA Technologies, Inc.

select Windows, Vista 32, then select the "Hyperion Pro (4 in 1)" chipset driver.

You have to add your card to the .inf by placing a correct line for it in the install .inf. I'll hook it up for ya. All you need to do is go to device manager, right click on card (standard vga), choose properties, details tab. Change the dropdown to hardware ids. It's the next one down. Then tell me what is to the right of dev_ in any line. I need the 4 digit value.

In the meantime, extract the install driver .exe to C:\ATI. I will upload an .inf for you to replace in there. Then you can install manually through the device manager by updating driver and finding the exact .inf.

We will be using the latest Catalyst 9.10 x86 32 bit for this, for Win 7. So download that if you currently are using something different. No hotfix. Normal Catalyst.

No go, here. I get a "cannot find the proper component" message. I had to go through this same thing with XP.. such a pain. Unfortunately I have no idea where I went to get that driver. Pretty sure I went with the legacy driver, but that one isn't available to Vista/7. Shall I give it a try with the legacy XP drivers, then? Even though that could cause my system to be entirely unbootable... Which I'm willing to risk. I have a couple Linux LiveCDs here for just such an event.

No legacy. I will have you up and running on a driver just released by ATI a day or so ago. You'll be quite happy.

Download that and overwrite the original with it by copying and pasting over it.

The folder it goes to is C:\ATI\Support\9-10_vista32_win7_32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver\Packages\Drivers\Display\W7_INF

After doing that, right click your card in device manager, choose update driver software. Browse. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse. Go to the above folder and choose the .inf I made for you.

If it complains the driver is not signed, let it install anyway. Reboot and then choose an Aero theme by rt clicking desktop, choose personalize.

Run setup.exe in C:\ATI\Support\9-10_vista32_win7_32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver
if you want CCC too.

Torrentg it sounds like your the savour to our problems. Where do you find the .inf file? aAre you creating them yourself? I have the same problem with my ATI 4650 1gig ..Last 4 digits is 9495. Any help would be appreciated.

Ya know, I heard a few things on the internet about modifying a certain .inf file like this to get some ATI cards working... Looks like Torrentng found a tutorial somewhere.

Yep. I make them custom for people. No, I developed this on my own although I'm sure many other knowledgeable users have done the same. It's standard driver stuff.

Crazy, here is your custom .inf for your Gigabyte HD 4650 AGP Card. Follow the instructions as per my post #7 on last page, only using this .inf. You need anything else, let me know.

Please see this. ATI says you should be running the Vista driver.
ATI Catalyst? Legacy Display Driver

If you really would like to try my method on your card, I can not guarantee success in this instance. That's because your class of card is not part of the possible choices in general installer section within the .inf. You may give it a shot though as I chose the oldest one possible to apply to your card. I don't think it will work, but might. Here's your .inf.

If it doesn't work, you will be happy with the Vista driver. The only difference is WDDM 1.1 for 7 and 1.0 for Vista.

Hi All,

I am having a similar issue with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and this Gigabyte Card.

I install the driver for the card from Gigabytes website and all goes well, reboot and get a BSOD regarding "atikmdag.sys".

I have pretty much tried everything I can figure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't look but I bet Gigabyte's version of Catalyst they have posted is older than the latest ATI.

Download the Suite Catalyst installer if you want to try my method. And also tell me your hardware id so I can make an .inf for you.

You'll be up and running on the latest.

I have gotten 64 bit to work for people, but 64 bit has by design and on purpose, troubles allowing an unsigned driver to run. I'm not even sure how the people I've helped on 64 bit have gotten my method to work. We can try if you like though.

You wanna know something? Uninstall only the CCC using the ATI Installer Manager under custom mode and your crashes may be gone. Use ATI Tray Tools instead.

Let me know if this fixes and/or what you want to do.

Oh yeah, that Gigabyte driver is irresponsibly old. Someone should get on them. What's up with that? Latest = 9.10 Gigabyte = 8.62, from 6/18/2009
